Here’s a wild thought: what if we focused on the good stuff for a change? I know, I know, good news is about as common in the media as unicorns at a dog show. But it’s out there. People are still doing incredible, uplifting, downright inspiring things - things that could actually give you a reason to believe in humanity again. But where’s the coverage? Oh, right - buried under a pile of rubbish news.

That’s where we come in. We’ve got a simple rule for our news: good news only. Crazy, right? But it works. Instead of feeding you a steady diet of fear and frustration, we focus on stories that make York a better place - because guess what? There’s plenty of good stuff happening if you care to look.

Inspiration, not fear, is what sparks change. So while the rest of the world might be preoccupied with throwing cheese graters at you, we’ll be over here, serving up something a bit more uplifting. Because York deserves better - and so do you.

Introducing our new YorkGen writer, the one and only ! 🐬

From a young age, Maggie has been on an epic quest… to find the ultimate bottomless brunch and the best bookshops. And now, she’s bringing her wisdom to The YorkGen blog.

Expect reviews of York’s iconic spots, interviews, local business shoutouts, and hilarious confessionals.

Maggie’s first masterpiece, ‘The Yorkshire Survival Guide,’ is live NOW on our site. If English is your second (or third) language, it’s worth a read.

Not because it’s bad (it’s great, promise), but because… well, you’ll understand once you read it.

Go show her some love, read her blog, and give it a like while you’re there. We’re beyond excited to have you, Maggie! Welcome to the team!

Introducing YorkGen’s first international artist, Francklin Mbungu! 🌍

His stunning African collages uncover the hidden celebrations of life, through a vibrant mixed media and layered compositions.

Originally inspired by artists who visited his father’s antiques shop when he was little, Mbungu’s work beautifully captures the paradox of life: survival, love, and boredom, all intertwined.

Check out his original work over on our website!

In a bid to enhance the biodiversity of the River Ouse, plans are afloat for a groundbreaking addition: a floating ecosystem designed to invigorate the waterway’s natural habitat.

Comprising plastic floats bound with stainless steel and anchored to the river wall, this 54-foot-long structure will host a variety of aquatic plants nestled in coconut fibre. Within a year, these plants are expected to transform the island into a flourishing riverside habitat, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

More than just a scenic addition, floating ecosystems play a crucial role in improving water quality by fostering aquatic life and balancing local ecosystems. These islands act as natural filters, mitigating pollution through plant-root microbes while providing sanctuary for small fish and nesting areas for birds.

We couldn’t be happier to present our latest featured artist of the summer 🧠

Amber’s work aims to evoke deep emotional responses rather than represent the literal, exploring realms beyond reality, where imagination, expression, and intuition reign.

Her paintings invite us all on a mysterious journey, challenging us with the absence of recognisable forms. Yet, within this uncertainty, lies our true home, and a deeper connection with one’s inner self.

Go and explore her amazing work over on The Independent Shop, and who knows? You might even find the perfect piece to bring home.

Check out our new homepage 👏

Thank you to everyone for the support and collaborations we have been blessed with so far. We're being born a little more each day, and you will always be the first.

We are now on a journey to becoming York's most popular and important platform for the arts, media and commerce. A journey which will take time and lots and lots of hard work.

For the good of artists, businesses, and citizens alike... the future, as they say, is looking rather bright.
