We had a great time at The Social Change Nest's Gathering in Birmingham yesterday. Being surrounded by people who may be doing different things to York Together but are so values aligned and are all in different ways looking at how communities can build local power.
finnegan ran a session with Natasha Friend and Catherine Dempsey on how to move money in participatory ways. Together with a room full of people interested in participatory approaches, we explore challenges, what worked well and shared examples and wove (literally) our ideas so that we can all take the knowledge back to our communities.

One of the unexpected questions that came out of the session is whether the word Participatory fully encompasses what we mean? We talked about how the process of coming together in community, working through disagreement, building trust is so valuable and is as important as the money that is distributed.

So often see participation as an experimental approach that is given smaller amounts than their traditional processes, indicating a lack of .

We've come away with a renewed sense of the importance of what York Together was set up to do and connections to other organisers and movements across the country with whom we can continue to learn.
