New Beginnings Horses

New Beginnings Horses New Beginnings provide a safe and secure environment where former racehorses can adjust and be re-trained for their second career following racing.

Horses come to us either straight from the trainer / owner or from private post-racing homes. New Beginnings is a registered Charity who retrain and re-home former racehorse. There are around 14,000 racehorses horses in training in Great Briton with approximately 4 to 5,000 leaving the sport each year, some of the successful ones go onto stud to breed the next generation of racehorses, some go rac

ing abroad, but due to the racehorses fantastic versatility many go onto be retrained to do dressage, showing eventing or to be a hack. But what happens to the ones that are quirky or difficult, or fall on hard times latter in life? That is where New Beginnings step in. New Beginnings take in horses straight from racing or more often they come from private post racing homes were for whatever reason the owner can no longer look after the horse. We never sell our horses, but once they are ready to be re-homed look for forever loan homes, this way we can guarantee security for the rest of the horse’s natural life. New Beginnings take in horses for the RoR through the “Vulnerable Horse Scheme” taking care of the most vulnerable former racehorses that need that extra care. We are now in its tenth year and have grown in both expertise and experience to offer each and every horse that comes to us the security that they need. We have come a long way starting with just a few acres to give security to a few horses to the Charity that we have evolved into. We always have a waiting list of horses needing the care that we offer, but we will never turn away a horse that is in desperate need away. New Beginnings are the only centre of its kind in the North East and are very proud of our passion for former racehorse’s.

🌹 Meet the Team: Katherine

As we count down to the opening of White Rose Equine Vets this September, we'd like to introduce you to our team, starting with Katherine, one of our directors and veterinary surgeons.

Katherine graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2015 and began her career as an intern at a busy equine practice in North Yorkshire. There, she gained valuable experience across anaesthesia, lameness, surgery, and medicine. Following her internship, Katherine joined the ambulatory team, managing a high volume of cases on the road and becoming a familiar face on many yards across the region.

Katherine has completed her Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice and, in 2023, passed her examination in Equine Internal Medicine. She is also qualified to perform acupuncture and carries out riding school inspections on behalf of the local councils.

Known for her calm, practical approach, Katherine is passionate about providing consistent, high-quality care and building strong relationships with clients through clear communication and pragmatic advice.

Away from work, she enjoys spending time with her retired Thoroughbred, Minstral, her two dogs and her family including her new baby who is nearly 3 months old already!

We had a great day with Queen Ethelburga's learning about thoroughbred care and the racing industry. 🏇We were delighted to be joined by Paul Hanagan, champion jockey and one of our patrons, Georgia Wood, a nutrition advisor from SPILLERS and Liam Murray, our farrier, to support the young people's understanding. A great lesson in life too from Paul as he spoke about the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. Thank you to everyone who helped to create a fabulous day. 💚🐴💛
