The York Student Think Tank in collaboration with the presents “Disillusion and Disinterest: what to do about political engagement”, delivered by Michael Meadowcroft! 🔎💡

WHEN? : 6pm - 4th December ❄️
Where? : D/N/56 ‼️
Tickets? : FREE! Get them on the YorkSu website by scanning the QR code or accessing the link in our LINKTREE (link in bio) 🧐

At a time when democratic backsliding seems to grow worse, people’s trust in the very system is as unreliable as ever. Michael Meadowcroft will consider how people can be drawn into politics, and how we can preserve the integrity of the system.

Michael is a life-long liberal. He joined the Liberal Party in 1962, holding several administrative posts within the party, before winning the Parliamentary seat of Leeds West in 1983, primarily through engaging in community politics. After losing re-election in 1987, he founded the “Continued” Liberal Party in protest against the merger with the SDP. Later, reconciled with the Liberal Democrats due to their opposition to identity cards and the Iraq War, and their pro-Europeanism, he rejoined the party in 2007.

- Michael also has an extensive career outside party politics. A staunch democrat, he was given the title of “Distinguished Visiting Fellow” by the Policy Studies Institute in 1989. From 1990, he became the Chair of the Electoral Reform Society and was in much demand as a public policy consultant for emerging democracies as a result of the implosion of the Soviet Union. He has been involved in fifty missions to thirty-five different countries, mainly across Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia, usually sponsored by the EU, UN, or OSCE.

- Michael is also a prolific writer and journalist. He is in particular demand as an obituarist for the Guardian and has also been a columnist in The Times and the Yorkshire Post. He’s written many pamphlets and books, too; a couple of relevant ones are listed below, alongside his website.

SECOND SPEAKER EVENT ALERT 📣‼️📖

Healthcare in the United Kingdom is in crisis. Join the York Student Think Tank in collaboration with the Social Policy Society for a hybrid speaker event delivered by Natasha Curry, brainstorming how we can use Japanese policy perspectives to save our social care system.

When? Monday 21st October 2024, from 6:30 pm free food and drinks for a 7 pm start. 🫡
Where? C/L/023X - Church Lane Building, Campus West. 💡
Tickets? Free! Sign up to secure your spot. Tickets are needed for entry. 🌟

How will this event work?
* This is a Pub Politics Special Edition event!
* This will be hybrid, with Natasha presenting online to all attendees in Church Lane! Alongside food and drink we will discuss this presentation after it is finished, weighing up the pros, and cons and allowing anyone to contribute to the conversation with any opinions.
* Then we will feed back to Natasha, and have an (optional) pub trip to the pub afterwards.

Natasha Curry is the Deputy Director of Policy at the Nuffield Trust - an independent health think tank. Since her graduation from Cambridge, she has obtained over 25 years of experience in the field of social care, being a fellow in Health Policy at the King’s Fund before joining the Nuffield Trust in 2011. As part of her extensive advocacy to improve the social care system in the UK, Natasha has been to Japan twice to conduct field research on how the UK can learn and apply the Japanese model to improve this area of public service delivery.

Join us at YSTT for our first speaker event this year 📣

On Thursday we will be joined by:
- Professor Maxine Molyneux, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at University College London
-Susana Berruecos, a Research Associate at the University of Oxford and the Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Canning House

Why is this event topic important❔
In order to effectively fight poverty, we need to fight all forms of inequality which contribute to it 🎯

Within Latin America and the Caribbean women are:

Five times more likely to be out of the labour force in their “fertile ages”.
20% less likely to have a bank account.
Faced with earning losses of 20-50% when they become mothers.
Shouldering 2.6 times the amount of unpaid domestic work than men do.
Experiencing a twice as high probability than men in living with both income and time poverty.

Interested in learning more? Passionate about fighting poverty and inequality? We welcome all across the York campus to attend this event! 🤝🌎

When? Thursday 3rd October at 7pm
Where? D/N/56

About us

The York Student Think Tank gives students an opportunity to experience policy-writing as a different way of engaging with politics. As a think-tank, we mainly produce policy papers on topics proposed by our members.

Through a variety of workshops hosted the first and second terms, we seek to provide students with the skills required to produce good policy ideas. This will include how to conduct both quantitative and qualitative research as well as how to present the finding of research in a professional format. We additionally host speakers from a vast array of fields - aiming to show how ideas and research-based planning can lead to real-life change.
