We had lovely weather in the Wood this morning.

We got to work scything and raking stinging nettles, and pulling up other species. This provided mulch to protect the saplings and encourage their growth, and allowed us to make space for the wildflowers before their arrival later this year.

Unfortunately it has come to our attention that food is being left in the wood.

We respectfully ask that no food, of any kind, is left so that vermin are not attracted.

The wood is managed for biodiversity so supports the wildlife.

Vermin carry potentially harmful diseases (Weils disease in particular) which can cause serious harm to humans and, especially young children, who use the wood on a regular basis.

If you witness anyone leaving food please politely point them to our Notice Boards where this message is displayed.

Thank you.

Another productive work day this past weekend.

This time, we focussed on looking after the wildlife and creatures of the wood.

Replenishing the bug hotel
Refurbishing the hedgehog hut
Arranging logs for various wildlife to hide and build homes in

We were even visited by a local cat who checked our work as we cleared an overgrown area.

Another productive work day this Mother's Day in Danesmead Wood.

We distributed some of the snowdrops around the wood, seeded wildflowers, and cut wood for dead hedging.

Primroses and violets are popping up across the wood.

The first traces of spring were in full display in Danesmead Wood this morning. Snowdrops, daffodils, crocuses and pear blossoms made for vibrant companions this sunny work day.

Now that some trees have grown up a bit, we freed them of their rabbit guards. Then, we used the same guards to protect the new saplings we have planted throughout the Wood.

The day finished turning over some moss and pulling out nettle roots to ready the soil for wildflowers in a few weeks' time.
