What a lovely way to celebrate International Day of Older People! 💚

We had a brilliant day in Filey, meeting people, catching up with familiar faces and talking about this year’s theme, “What’s on Your Doorstep?”

We heard about the people, places, activities and services that help people stay active, connected and independent, as well as some of the things that can make getting involved more difficult.

And we have to give a special shout-out to our wonderful Age Friendly Network Ambassador Marilyn, who joined Catherine and Claire for the day. 🌟

Our Ambassadors are the friendly faces of the Age Friendly Network in their communities. They help us make connections, listen to local people and spread the word about the Network, and they'll play a crucial part in helping us develop it for the future.

As an extra surprise, we also got to meet the Mayor of Filey, Wendy Fenlon, an Councillor Mike Fenlon and chat about the importance of encouraging an all-age friendly society.

A huge thank you to Filey Fields Court and Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors for organising the event and making us feel so welcome.

And above all, thank you to everybody who stopped to talk to us and shared their thoughts.

Growing older doesn't have to mean becoming more isolated.

At our next Network meeting, we'll explore the causes and impacts of loneliness and look at how communities, befriending services and local organisations can help people stay connected and age well.

We'll hear from Lucy Gifford, Head of Service at MIND (Harrogate District) and Helen Flynn from Nidderdale Plus, who'll talk about their befriending work in a very rural area. We'll also share practical ideas from across North Yorkshire and discuss what more we can do together to support older people.

Whether you're an individual network member, part of an organisation, a community group, a volunteer, or an older person with an interest in making North Yorkshire a great place to grow older, we'd love to hear your perspective.

As part of the discussion, we'll also be welcoming some of our new Network Ambassadors and looking ahead to future priorities.
