RAISING THE AWARENESS OF MENINGITIS TO TEENAGERS & YOUNG ADULTS
Our family want to do all we can to stop another family having to go through the heartache and pain we have, and the pain we live with each day without Livia here with us.
Liv’s Aunty Andrea has met with the Meningitis Research Foundation to discuss their plans for raising awareness in Liv’s age group and what we can also do to help. Meningitis does affect all ages but for us our aim is to raise the awareness with Liv’s age group, as I wasn’t aware of the higher risk to Liv, and it’s hard not to blame myself as I do think if I was aware Livia could still be here with us living her life to the full as she did.
Please please share the following information with as many of your family and friends as you can:
Teenagers and young adults are at higher risk of meningitis, they are also the most likely to carry and spread the bacteria to others.
It is easy to mistake meningitis for freshers flu, COVID or even a hangover.
The meningitis symptoms to watch out for are:
Severe Headache
Fever and or vomiting
Dislike of bright lights
Rash
Sleepy
Stiff neck
Confused
Seizures
It can be just one of these symptoms or all, in any order.
Babies born after 2015 receive a MenB vaccine, there is a vaccine available privately that is not considered cost effective for the Government to roll out to this age group. It costs around £220 for 2 doses that protects for around 5 years.
If we were aware of this we would of definitely paid privately for Livia to be vaccinated, and as Liv’s Grandad said it would of been the best money we had ever spent.
