West Thorpe Methodist Scout Group

As we look ahead to a New Year, many of our young people are very excited about attending in August.

Back in November, the group pulled together to host a Christmas fair, quiz and auction evening in aid of this brilliant cause - raising a whopping £800 towards our fundraising target.

A huge thank you must go to every leader, parent, helper or young member that supported the running of the event, as well as - of course - everyone that attended and so generously donated their time and money.

We were especially blown away to have Councillors Stephen Fenton & Andrew Waller in attendance, who are both brilliant supporters of our group, along with Lord Mayor Councillor Martin Rowley & Deputy Lord Mayor Margaret Wells. We thank all of them for giving up their time to support our young people on their Poacher journey!

To celebrate the end of the Autumn Term, our Young Leaders headed to in an attempt to complete two Escape Rooms.

Both teams escaped, with Team 1 having 10 minutes an 15 seconds remaining, while Team 2 escaped with a remaining 10 minutes and 2 seconds.

Plenty of needed in teamwork, leadership and communication!

SQUIRRELS NEEDED!

We are on the lookout for keen 4-6 year olds who are on the lookout for some fun, adventure and new friends!

West Thorpe Squirrels meet every Monday evening from 5.15-6.15 and have spaces for new Squirrels to start immediately! If you know a young person who may be interested, please get in touch with us by emailing Tom on [email protected].

Not sure if Squirrels is right for them? We don’t charge for the first month, so feel free to use that as a trial before committing long-term!

COME AND SUPPORT US THIS FRIDAY!

This Friday, we are holding a fundraiser event at West Thorpe Church, which is open to all, to raise much needed funds for 14 of our young people who are heading on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Poacher International Jamboree in August 2026.

The event will involve a mini-auction, various stalls, refreshments, soft axe throwing, a raffle and a quiz. Stalls open at 7pm, with the quiz starting at 8. We would be so so grateful to have as many of you there as possible, so get your quiz team ready for an evening of fun, laughter and entertainment!

Autumn Camp… over and out!

We have had an amazing weekend at the home of York Scouting . Our Cubs have shown great resilience and fought the wind and the rain to camp outside, while our Beavers and Squirrels have experienced a range of Autumn themed activities (the s’mores and food-related activities were a particular hit!).

Next up… Group Camp 26!

It is always such a pleasure to pay our respects to the fallen with the annual service at West Thorpe Church.

We took part in a range of activities with Rev Jill to understand the huge sacrifice made by so many, as we mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

All the way back in July, our took a trip to where they got the opportunity to see a range of animals and even hold them!

They were blown away by the performances of the sea lions and were stunned to discover how good snail slime is for the skin!

CAN YOU HELP?

14 of our Scouts are taking a trip to Poacher International Jamboree in August 2026 and they are trying to raise £2000 to help them get there! All donations and shares would be gratefully received.

They will also be holding a charity auction in November to raise funds, followed by a sponsored walk in the Spring.

What have our Young Leader Unit been up to recently?

This week, our 14-17 volunteers met to complete Module C, where they partook in various tasks in order to understand the importance of differentiating learning styles, clear instructions and consistent communication.

They are now ready to put what they have learnt into practice with their sections 👊

Our have made a great start to the new term. This week, they paid a visit to where they worked on their axe skills & fire lighting.

And no night at Snowball is ever complete without a bit of Backwoods Cooking!
