Many thanks to volunteer, Friedy for these fantastic photos taken today whilst pulling balsam at Staveley!

We have a drinker moth caterpillar (the name "drinker" comes from the caterpillar's habit of drinking drops of dew and rainwater from grass stems), a snout moth & a small tortoiseshell butterfly caterpillar.

Its amazing what you can find in the undergrowth amongst the balsam, nettles, thistles & bramble! 😁

"Nature at it's best. New life.

The Swifts have not appeared to find the dedicated nest box, but Mr and Mrs Blue Tit did and successfully raised 4 young.

Phil heard and spotted this nest site when I was at work on Bank Holiday Monday.

We have checked as we have passed on evenings since - watching the Blue Tit parents working very hard taking plenty of food in.

These photos were taken on Friday evening when they appeared all but ready to fledge.

Then yesterday, if you check the last two photos, we found the nest was quiet and the young were learning to fly around their new surroundings. ❀️"

Finally before heading home we went to find our new arrivals - 6 Highlands (aged between 1 & 2 years).
They are so cute! πŸ˜ƒ
They are newly purchased from The Harewood Estate & will be at Staveley until mid June before moving onto Ripon City Wetlands.

Ros & I also did a bit of dragonfly / damselfly training this morning - spotted lots of damselflies (azure, common blue, blue-tailed & reds) & a few dragonflies (hairy & four-spotted chasers).
There were quite a few unknowns too - they just don't stay still long enough to identify! 😁

Tis the start of balsam pulling season! 😁
It was a tad hot today πŸ₯΅ but we have made a start on pulling balsam - we headed into the woodland area opposite Tower Hide (we needed to work in the shade!).
After lunch we assisted Angus & James from the Grazing Team to bring in the 4 belties to the catching pen from West Lagoon Field - one of them needed their 'no fence' collar reattaching.
