Street Angels York

Street Angels York Street Angels York is a Church-led initiative that is made up of volunteers who want to help make York city centre a safer and better place.

Volunteers walk the city streets into the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights caring for, practically helping and listening to people, especially those in vulnerable or difficult situations.

Joyful June Thank-Yous!
Tonight’s Joyful June Thank‑You goes to the brilliant door staff and venue teams across York who work alongside us every single shift.

From offering us water, to giving us space to support someone, to checking in when they spot someone who might need help - your teamwork makes a huge difference! You’re often the first to notice when someone is struggling, and your kindness and communication helps us step in quickly and safely.

We appreciate you more than you know. 💛

We’ve got teams out in York city centre tonight and tomorrow night!
If you spot us in our bright orange high vis jackets, feel free to say hello (as long as we’re not already helping someone). We’re always happy to share what we do and offer support where it’s needed.
Street Angels are volunteers who head into York’s nightlife to offer care, compassion, and practical support to anyone who needs it.
We’re a calm, friendly presence on the streets. When someone is vulnerable or alone, we step in. Whether that’s helping them get home safely, giving directions, or staying with them until they’re sober or well enough to get a taxi.
We’re also well known for our flip flops and water bottles… no matter the weather!

10/06/2026

We might be a little bit behind schedule this month, but we're making this month Joyful June! Joyful June will run the remainder of the month where we shine a light on the people who help make York's nightlife safer, kinder, and more connected.

When we volunteer on weekends, we work alongside some incredible teams and individuals who support what we do, sometimes quietly and behind the scenes. Joyful June is our chance to celebrate them: the partners, helpers, and everyday heroes who make our nights brighter.

We spend a lot of time helping those who need support… but we also witness moments that make us smile, remind us why we volunteer, and show just how kind York’s nightlife can be!

So even though we're starting this month's theme behind schedule, we’re excited to share the joy with you throughout the rest of the month. 💛

Stay tuned for our Joyful June Thank-Yous to those that deserve to be seen and appreciated!

Yesterday, some of our Angels took part in Throw Line training, led by the wonderful Alan, an RNLI volunteer who generously shared his time and expertise with us.

Throw line training has taught our volunteers with the knowledge of how to safely throw a rescue line to a person in need in the water without putting themselves at risk. With York’s rivers running right through the city centre, it’s an important skill that helps us keep people safe on a night out!

We’re also incredibly grateful to Slug & Lettuce York Riverside for offering their room hire free of charge. Support like this helps keep our training accessible and our volunteers confident and prepared.

It really does take a community to support a community. 💛

Welcome to the final week of "Myth Busting May!"

Myth #7
“Street Angels replace emergency services.”

We work alongside emergency services, not instead of them. If someone needs medical care or police support, we call them straight away. Street Angels are not trained or expected to deliver any first aid or medical treatment. Our presence helps reduce pressure, not replace it.

Myth 8
“Street Angels only hand out water/flip flops.”

Handing out water/flip flops are absolutely a part of what we do, sure!
But we also reunite lost friends, help people get home safely, give directions, charge phones, and support anyone who’s feeling vulnerable.

It’s small acts that add up to a safer night out.

Thanks to everyone who got involved in tackling these myths!
Are there any that stood out to you or surprised you most?

Welcome to Week 3 of "Myth Busting May!"

Myth #5
“Street Angels only go out when town is busy.”

We aim to be out every Friday and Saturday night (plus the occasional Sunday when a bank holiday Monday follows it) throughout the entire year.
York’s nightlife is busy all year round, and we’re there to support people whenever we can!

Myth #6
“Volunteering must be scary.”

Most people are surprised by how calm and gentle the role can be. If anything, we get over-loved because the public really acknowledges and appreciates the efforts that our volunteers put into keeping York safe!
When you start volunteering with Street Angels, you have shadow shifts until you feel comfortable with joining the team on a more permanent basis.
You’re always in a team of 3-4 people, you’re never thrown into anything alone, and any decision made is made as a team.
The majority of a shift is often roaming the streets of York until we spot someone, or are informed of someone, who may be in need of help, chatting to the public, and being a reassuring presence.
If you’re kind and steady, you’ll be a great addition!

If you’ve got a myth you’d like us to cover, feel free to drop it in the comments or send us a message!

Come back this time next week where we will bust two more myths!

York at night has its own kind of magic…
One of our teams came across this brilliant grass bear from The York BID while out on shift recently.

Volunteering with Street Angels means you get to see a side of York that some people may miss during the day. When the daytime rush has faded and the streets slow down, the city reveals all sorts of small, beautiful details, such as paw-sitively creative installations like this one!

Most of our time is spent looking out for anyone who might need support, offering a chat, or helping someone get home safely… but every now and then, York gives us these unexpected moments that remind us just how special this city is.

Huge thanks to York BID for bringing these touches of creativity to the city centre. They brighten our nights, as much as everyone else’s.

And if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to experience York in this way while making a real difference, please email [email protected] if you can spare just one evening a month to volunteer as a Street Angel.

Welcome to Week 2 of "Myth Busting May!"

Myth #3
“You have to be Christian to volunteer.”

This is a very common misconception. You don’t actually need to be Christian, or religious at all, to volunteer with us. Our team includes people of different faiths and people with no faith. What matters is compassion, teamwork, and wanting to help others feel safe on a night out.
We simply ask that you respect those who choose to take part in the prayers at the start and end of the shift.
If you care about people, you’ll fit right in!

Myth #4
“Street Angels are basically security.”

We’re not security, enforcement, or authority. We don’t intervene in fights or deal with conflict. Our role is to spot people who might need support and offer gentle, practical help before things escalate.
Think of us as the friendly safety net in the background 😇

If you’ve got a myth you’d like us to cover, feel free to drop it in the comments or send us a message!

Come back this time next week to bust some more myths!
