Meet Mark, who is currently being cared for on our Inpatient Unit at the Hospice. 🌻

Speaking about his experience, Mark said: "I first became involved with St Leonard's through my pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis.

"I was reading information about my condition online and it referenced the Breathing Space group, which is run by St Leonard's. It's a monthly group where people can sit back, talk to each other, share their worries and concerns and support one another. My wife, Helena, and I started attending when I was first being troubled with breathlessness, and it's simply wonderful.

"We've met so many people who are very happy and comfortable to sit down with complete strangers to share their experiences of living with a life-limiting condition, and how you can lead a better life by accessing support from St Leonard's.

"Without the team's care, the advice they've given and the ability for us to reach out to different support groups, I would possibly be dead by now.

"While I've been at the Hospice, they've been able to work with all my symptoms to minimise them and make my quality of life so much better than it was when I first came through the doors three weeks ago. The change has been unbelievable, and the support provided to Helena at the same time has been invaluable. We have nothing but praise."

There are just over two weeks to go until the Pedal for St Leonard's challenge begins! Could you cycle 200km or 400km throughout the month of September for local hospice care? 🚴

Complete your kilometres however you like across the 30 days, whether that's on an e-bike, at the gym or by cycling to work every day. You might prefer to cycle daily or head out for longer rides at the weekend, but the most important thing is to have fun and feel good while supporting St Leonard's. 🌻

There's no specific sponsorship target, but if you can raise £25, you'll receive a branded St Leonard's T-shirt, and if you can raise £100, you'll earn an exclusive St Leonard's water bottle!

Ready to hit the pedals? Find out more and sign up today for free at https://stleonardshospice.org.uk/pedal-for-st-leonards/ 💛

A huge thank you to Stuart, who visited the Hospice today to donate a foldout bed for families to use when visiting loved ones on our Inpatient Unit. 💛

We're so grateful to have received this bed in memory of his wife, Georgie, who was cared for by our team in December.

Stuart said: "We collected donations at Georgie's funeral and wanted to buy something that the Hospice would find useful. We hope this makes a difference for more families over the years."

Thank you again for helping to make overnight stays for visitors more comfortable, allowing loved ones to remain close by when it's needed most. 🌻

Our Hospice@Home team provides care to local people in the place they call home, 365 days a year. 💛

At St Leonard's, we've been working hard to spread the word about this important service, so that as many people as possible can receive our support when they need it most.

We're proud to share that, since April this year, our Hospice@Home team has consistently provided care to more people. In July, we supported 63 people across York and the surrounding area, which is around a third more than in a typical month.

As more people than ever receive our compassionate end-of-life care at home, we're helping to make the most difficult time in their lives a little less heavy for them and their loved ones. 🌻

We always love seeing the brilliant things supporters in our community do to raise money for St Leonard's Hospice. 🌻

Here's a look at what some fantastic fundraisers have been up to over the past few weeks...

1. A group of friends walked 28 miles from Selby Abbey to York Minster in memory of their good friend, John, who was a priest in the Church of England for over 50 years. Together, they raised £3,265.

2. Robyn Hogarth ran the Great North 10K in memory of his good friend, Keith, who was cared for by the Hospice, and raised £826.

3. Eboracum Lodge 1611 donated £500 to St Leonard's as part of their charity fundraising.

4. Roy Friend and friends donated £340, so they could wear St Leonard's T-shirts to the Rugby League 2026 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium in May.

5. The Ashton family organised the Paul Ashton Memorial Golf Day at Forest Park Golf Club in May and raised £2,405.

6. Callum Adlington has been taking photographs and using them to create beautiful greeting cards. Since he first started fundraising for the Hospice in 2021, he's raised £2,145.

7. York bands Last Chance and Cut and Run gigged in aid of St Leonard's in May and raised over £770.

Thank you all so much! We're only able to do what we do at St Leonard's because of support like yours. 💛

We're pleased to launch our new Ward Volunteer role! 💛

Following on from the success of our Youth Ward Volunteer Pilot Programme, which saw young people aged 16 to 25 gain practical experience on our Inpatient Unit over six weeks, we're now looking for volunteers of all ages to help out at the Hospice on a regular basis.

Ward Volunteers provide hands-on support and companionship on our Inpatient Unit, helping create a warm and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and staff.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community and support the work of St Leonard's, then we'd love to hear from you.

Head to https://stleonardshospiceyork.talosats-careers.com/job/918080 to find out more and apply today. 🌻
