Pregnant Then Screwed Charity campaigning to end the motherhood penalty

Pregnant Then Screwed is a charity run by women who have lived experience of pregnancy and maternity discrimination. Our aim is to end the motherhood penalty so that pregnant women and mothers have equal access to the labour market. We run a free legal advice line, a mentor scheme which supports women who want to take legal action against their employer and we lobby the Government for changes to l

egislation which will benefit women. During the Covid-19 pandemic we managed to change laws so that parents could continue to use informal childcare and so that children under the age of 5 were excluded from the guidance - ensuring new mums could meet with others.

On Wednesday we asked what you’d say to Reform. Today we’re asking what you’d say to Andy Burnham, a potential contender for Labour leader. Because whoever leads, parents deserve to be heard.

🤔 Reform UK say they’re offering “the largest set of protections for women in British history.”

But how do we know that when there’s so little detail? The gaps are big and some parts are very carefully worded.

This bit’s important: alongside “same work, same pay”, it’s reported that Reform also want to limit how tribunals compare equal‑value roles.

Equal value is how women challenge pay gaps when different jobs require equivalent skill and responsibility.

If that’s restricted, challenging unfair pay becomes much harder.

We want to speak with Reform UK to plug the gaps and we want to hear from you.

❓ If there’s going to be a “Women & Motherhood Protection Act”, what must be in it? What are your red lines? Your non‑negotiables? What’s helped you and what’s made things harder?

⬇️ Drop your priorities below. We’ll take them straight to Reform UK and report back.

☀️👶🏼The summer holidays are fast approaching…and so is the chaos.

In just a few weeks, most schools will break up for summer. Cue the colour-coded calendars, the childcare spreadsheets, the drop off and pick ups, and the screen time guilt trip.

For so many working mums, summer doesn’t mean switching off. It means juggling work calls from the sidelines of soft play, turning down work, using annual or unpaid leave to fill the gaps, cutting back hours, or carrying the stress of trying to keep everything afloat without dropping the ball.

And all of it comes at a huge cost: financially, mentally, and professionally.

If your summer is held together by a hope and a dream, we want to hear from you.

📊 📃 Yesterday, PTS was invited to give evidence on childcare to the Education Select Committee - taking parents’ voices direct to Parliament.

Armed with evidence and testimonies from 5000 of you, our CEO Rachel told the committee how the childcare system is failing families in England:

- Childcare is a major economic barrier
- It is forcing parents, especially mothers, out of the workforce
- Families with children with SEND are being left behind
- And the crisis is impacting those on the lowest incomes the most

The failing childcare system is layered in the world’s worst lasagne of systemic failure, with failing parental leave, inflexible and punitive working cultures and conditions and discrimination of any kind including racism, sexism, ableism, classism and the exclusion of LGBTQ+ parents in mainstream discourse.

Once we fix the childcare system, the barriers parents face to working and caring without penalty will not miraculously go away, but it is a key part of the puzzle.

👏🏽 Thank you for filling out our State of the Nation survey - all of your stories and data were at the heart of this evidence.

But, the work is far from complete.

The big summer juggle is fast approaching and decision makers need to know about the specific childcare challenges of the summer holidays.

Busy one for PTS today 🏃‍♀️💨

Both Rachel and Rebecca were in London, dividing and conquering across key meetings on parental leave and childcare, including the Education Select Committee 👀

Update on that coming soon!

Half‑term childcare juggle. How’s it going?

A bit of joy, a bit of chaos, a bit of “how is it only Wednesday”?

Some of you are in half term right now.

Some of you have holidays coming up.

And all of you are doing your own version of the juggle: annual leave, unpaid leave, the childcare hokey‑cokey, working with kids in tow, and grabbing the good moments (and sunshine) in between.

Drop a comment and tell us your half‑term survival tactics and your summer holiday battle plan.

Help us show the Government what families actually need for a Great British Summer.

Ahhh summer: sun, sand, and the spiralling cost of childcare 🫠

The school holidays are fast approaching across the UK and for parents, that means one thing: the summer juggle is back.

While everyone else is booking breaks, many families are bracing for six weeks of logistical gymnastics, eye-watering bills, and career compromises. For too many, summer doesn’t feel like a holiday at all.

So we’ve launched our 2026 Summer Childcare Survey.

We want the full picture:
☀️ Have you managed to patch together cover?
💸 How much is it costing you?
📉 Is it affecting your work, hours or progression?
😩 How are you actually coping?

We’ll use your stories and data to hold decision-makers to account and push for the structural change families desperately need.

If summer feels more stress than sunshine, tell us about it!

The law has changed. The question is, will workplaces.

New rights. Stronger protections. Higher penalties.

But if parents still can’t afford to take leave, or don’t feel safe speaking up, is it enough?

These changes matter and they’re long overdue.
But they’re also the bare minimum. A baseline, not the finish line.

Real progress happens when employers go further:
when policies are generous, cultures are safe, and every mum, parent and family can care or work without penalty.

More improvements are coming in October and January 2027 and we’ll keep pushing until the system works for everyone.

Head to our webpage for the full breakdown of what’s changed and what it means for you.

So tell us, what still needs to change for parents to actually feel the benefit of these rights?

❤️Doing the job of two with the strength of ten.

This Single Parents Day we’re celebrating the parents doing it all, often without the support or recognition they deserve.

Single parenthood doesn’t look one way. Some parents are raising children alone after bereavement, some while a partner works away, some after separation, and some by choice. But the reality is often the same: one person carrying it all.

- Providing on one income
- Juggling work, school runs and childcare
- Making impossible calculations when childcare costs rival a pay-check.
- Holding the mental load, every day, without a break

And still showing up with love, resilience and extraordinary strength.

Today we recognise every single parent and every single‑parent family. Your dedication deserves to be seen, not just today, but every day.

We joined in Parliament on Thursday to support their important work and to help make sure MPs and the government hear directly from single parents about what they need most.
If you could change one thing for single parents, what would it be?
