Our speaker for Monday 6th July is David Mayne - sculptor

David Mayne is a British sculptor celebrated for his evocative representations of nature and wildlife. Working primarily with steel and wood, he crafts sculptures that capture the essence of animals and landscapes, often incorporating elements like trees, birds, and woodland creatures. His pieces range from small-scale works suitable for domestic settings to large public art installations, all reflecting a deep connection to the natural world.

"Mayne's dedication to exploring the relationship between art and nature has solidified his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary British sculpture. His work continues to enhance public spaces and inspire communities, reflecting his commitment to creating art that resonates with both its environment and its audience."

Thin Ice Press - YAWA Members' Outing
Monday 1st June 2026
Thin Ice Press, The Old School House, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW
Meet at 7.00pm

started out on the University of York campus in 2017 - moving to the vacated premises of the Old School Gallery on Peasholme Green just two years ago. Nestled in the tranquil St Anthony's Garden, just opposite The Dispensary and overlooked by the city walls, this pressroom, museum and gallery brings together historic presses, centuries-old techniques, and a community working to ensure an endangered craft and skills thrive for years to come. The goal of Thin Ice Press is to ensure the the future of traditional printing, not just preserving the past but bringing it to life.

We have been invited to visit on Monday 1st June (members only due to space constraints). Please arrive for 7 o'clock. We'd be anticipating about an hour for the formal part of the visit, with a little time afterwards for people to browse / take photographs / ask questions. Light refreshments (a glass of wine and some nibbles) will be available. The charge will be the usual £3 for the evening. Some of us will probably go across the road to the pub afterwards if anyone else wants to join us for a drink there.

Please indicate if you intend to come by emailing [email protected]

Our speaker this month was Ric Liptrot Ric's an illustrator, very well known now for his work celebrating York buildings. Everyone enjoyed learning about the unusual and really imaginative techniques and processes he uses.

Ric runs courses on illustration and he's well worth following on social media. His web site is https://www.liptrotillustration.co.uk/

Collect –– Make –– Draw
A creative investigation of materiality and tactile sensibility
12 - 14 May 2026.

The workshop will be over three days, open ended, exploratory, playful and totally non prescriptive.
I’m imagining some participants will quickly move onto the expressive drawing stage and others may prefer to spend the whole time making.
