An update about the Treemendous York Partnership for all who have worked with us over the years
In 2010 the City of York Council produced a “Towards York Economic Vision” which aimed at highlighting York’s pre-eminence not only in the areas of tourism, education and science, but also as a “greener city”.
One of many reactions to this local government strategy was the formation of a small voluntary group of tree-lovers dedicated to planting trees and hedges on private and community land. They gave themselves the unforgettable name of Treemendous.
Since then, we have planted almost 100,000 trees 🌳🌳🌳including hedge trees. Many of the more recent woodland projects have been on Campus East of the University of York. Our achievements are documented in the Case Studies section on our website https://www.treemendousyork.com/casestudies.php
Some of the trees planted have been supplied for free by the Woodland Trust, and others by a range of generous sponsors, all tree planting and maintenance have done for FREE.
The Chair (Barry Otley), Vice-Chair (Derek Utley) resigned at the September AGM 2024, and we have been unable to find replacements for these posts. Consequently, to use surplus expensive biodegradable protection, tree planting continued in November, December, and maintenance ended in March 2025, with Treasurer (Neil Mcilveen) leading all events.
There are still many opportunities for tree planting in the York area, so any groups or individuals interested in continuing our activity should contact St Nicks [email protected]
