You may believe s3xual v:olence doesn't happen in our rural communities, but it does.

Otherwise, we wouldn't be here.

Right now, there’s folks across the county who are suffering because of something someone did to them.

Survive – North Yorkshire’s only UKAS accredited specialist service – helps survivors to heal and move on with their lives. And you can help us do it by sparing a couple of quid each month – the price of a brew.

After being subjected to sexual violence, coping is about survival - and every survivor deserves tools that support their healing.

While it can be tempting to numb the pain through alcohol or substances, long-term healing is more likely to come from coping methods that protect our body, mind, and future.

Healthy coping can include:
- Reaching out for support from trusted people or professionals
- Moving your body in ways that feel safe and grounding
- Practicing breathing, mindfulness, or other grounding techniques
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet
- Creating routines and boundaries that restore a sense of control

Choosing healthier coping strategies isn’t about being “strong enough” - it’s about self care, relief, and safety. And sometimes, we need specialist support to be in a position to give ourselves those things, especially after facing traumatic experiences.

You can call our helpline for support for free and speak in confidence on 0808 145 1887, open Mon – Thurs from 10am to 12noon.

When someone is assaulted or abused, they may turn inwards and ask "What did I do to deserve this?".

Please hear us when we say -
IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT.

No one invites sexual violence.

It is only EVER the fault of the perpetrator.

Sexual violence can happen to anyone, at any stage of their life.

One survivor will be completely different to another survivor, but each single one has one thing in common - IT WAS NOT THEIR FAULT.

If a survivor disclosed their assault to you, would you know what to do or say?

It can take a survivor months, years, or even decades to tell someone about what happened to them. Here are some tips that may help if someone discloses to you - you can save them for later.

And keep a note of our helpline phone number - 0808 145 1887 - open Monday to Thursday (excluding public holidays) from 10am to 12 noon.

If our team is unavailable at the time of your call, other resources also include:
• The Survivor’s Trust website and helpline - https://thesurvivorstrust.org/our-helpline
• R**e and Sexual Abuse Support Line - 0808 500 2222 - open 24/7

If someone is in immediate danger, please call 999.

These are real comments taken from online posts about serious experiences of sexual violence.

There are many reasons why a survivor may not tell anyone immediately or ever - including shame, stigma, fear of the perpetrator, and fear of being called a liar...

Sexual violence is traumatic and it can take a survivor time to come to terms with what they have experienced. Coming forward, even for support, may feel daunting and even re-traumatising.

We, as a society, must do better and change the conversation around sexual violence, allowing survivors to feel safe to come forward.
