Good morning, I have news of an exciting development for Cafe Neuro York. I have attached the job advert we have for a Freelance Activity Co-ordinator. Please let anyone know who might be interested.
Role outline
Café Neuro York freelance activity co-ordinator
This is an exciting opportunity to support the work and development of Café Neuro York (www.cafeneuroyork.org.uk ).
Café Neuro York is a young charity and you will be joining a very supportive and committed team of trustees. You will help shape the future of this innovative approach to psychological and social support for people with, and affected by, a long-term neurological condition.
We are looking for someone to help build on the work we already done. We want to develop the charity to be able to do more for our members and reach more people. We want to provide new and different opportunities for people with long term neurological conditions in York, enable them to have a voice about what they want, enable them to meet together to share experiences, talk to people without having to explain their condition, share and learn useful information, and take part in fun activities.
What we need
The essential qualities we are looking for in a freelance worker are;
• Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of building relationships and trust with the local community, health and care organisations and individuals in York.
• Good knowledge of the local community and population or willingness to build contacts.
• Good IT skills and access to own IT equipment.
• The ability to provide feedback, regular reports and liaise with the Board of Trustees.
• Good organisation skills, including setting up and running events/activities.
• Able to liaise with different agencies and stakeholders.
• Experience of creating networks.
• A willingness and ability to travel within York where needed.
Desirable qualities are;
• Basic awareness of the needs of people affected by a neurological condition, and awareness of issues for disabled people in general.
• Familiarity with the voluntarysector and the ability to map out existing services delivered by statutory and non-statutory organisations.
• A track record of successfully securing bids for funding/grants for charities.
• Experience of facilitating meetings.

Requirements of the freelance worker with Café Neuro York.
The role will involve:
• Helping to run the charity as needed. This could include identifying and booking venues, securing speakers, identifying activities for the cafés or new initiatives etc.
• Attending some face-to-face cafes to get to know the people attending and let them get to know you, as the person helping with the running of the charity.
• Getting to know the attendees to the cafes and understanding what they want for Café Neuro York. Understanding the needs of the attendees in terms of the style of presentation at events and activities.
• Developing and delivering an activity programme for the cafes, using the information already collected. Contacting the presenters or finding people who could put on an activity/event.
• Organising trips and visits for Café Neuro York attendees including booking venues and transport.
• Devise ways of promoting the work of Café Neuro York in order to engage with as many people as possible who are affected by a neurological condition. Including working with trustees, attendees and our social media support, promoting Café Neuro York, media work including writing and distributing press releases, giving talks or presenting information about Café Neuro York, representing Café Neuro York at events or running information activities including stalls.
• Building on existing contacts with health, care and others including the press, as appropriate to raise awareness about Café Neuro York and our activities. Working with trustees and Café Neuro York attendees to gain feedback about the ideas for further activities, speakers and developing the charity.
• Working closely with our social media support and updating the Café Neuro York website and social media with information as required.
• Provide quarterly reports for the Trustees meeting.
• Help recruit and support volunteers as needed.
• As needed support the trustees to identify and apply for funding through grants and other opportunities.
• Additional project work as required.
Payment and management.
You will work in a freelance capacity and will not be directly employed by Café Neuro York.
You will report to the Board of Trustees and have a designated contact, for management and supervision, of the chair of the board of trustees.
We envisage that you will work approximately 16 hours a month, or a total of 192 hours per year, at £20 per hour. This will be flexible and will be agreed in partnership with your key trustee contact after appointment. Payment will be on receipt of an itemised invoice on an agreed basis, e.g. monthly.
You will be home-based and will use your own IT equipment. However, we will provide a mobile phone.
Application and interview date
Please apply by sending your CV with a covering letter to [email protected] . Please also supply two references of which one is from someone you have worked with in the recent two years. We will contact them after the interviews.
The closing date for application is 5pm on Sunday 7th September 2025 with face-to-face interviews, including a short presentation, on Monday 22nd September 2025 at the Folk Hall. The candidates being interviewed will be invited to attend the Café Neuro York catch up and cuppa session on Friday 19th September at the Folk Hall in New Earswick.
DBS Check
Given the vulnerability of the people attending Café Neuro York, we would like you to have or be willing to have a full DBS check completed. We will arrange for the DBS check to be done if you do not have this already.
