The battery in the defibrillator at the Rec needs replacing every 4 to 5 years, more frequently if the defibrillator has been used. Although the defibrillator is taken from its case as a precaution several times a year, so far, it has never been used.

The battery was replaced today at a cost of £259: not cheap, but worth every penny if it saves a life.

THE LIGHTS ARE NOW BACK ON

As the nights drew in, we realised that the lights on the footpath from the cricket scorebox to the Scout’s building, which are operated by a time switch and sensor to save electricity, were not working.

Thanks to a speedy response from our electrical contractors, Lister’s, they identified the fault and replaced the time switch.

Hopefully those using the path will be able to see their way better and feel safer.

Part of a delivery of 90 tons of sand to go onto the field to improve the drainage.

Thanks to a PitchPower grant from the Football Foundation, a 5-year tapered grant, we have been able to redirect some of our allocated funds to adding sand to the field which will be completed by a contractor in the next few days.

This is part of our desire to improve the playing surfaces for the Tennis Club by helping them with resurfacing the courts, the Cricket and Bowling Clubs with grants for their end of season renovations and the football club so that fewer games are cancelled over the winter period.

It will also mean that the field will be in a better state for anyone to use for recreational purposes throughout the year.

Without the significant funds raised by the Carnival, we would not be in a position to do all of this work, so thanks to all who volunteered with the carnival and those who supported the carnival in any way.

MOUNTAIN BIKES, E-SCOOTERS & E-BIKES AT THE REC

Mountain biking:

Over the last few weeks a number of youngsters from the village have been using the Rec to practice their mountain biking skills either on a purpose built ramp that they bring on site or on soil ramps that they have created by digging up the soil on the bank by side of the junior football pitch or by the side of the tennis courts.

Whilst we would like to support these youngsters in their sport, our insurance does not allow this and until this can be resolved, we can't allow this to happen at the Rec. If anyone has any views on how we progress this, which would probably require paying an increased insurance premium, please email: [email protected]

We are explaining this to the bikers when we see them at the Rec but if you are a parent of one of these youngsters, can you please explain to them why we can't allow them to use their mountain bikes in this way?

E-scooters and E-bikes:

After a complaint from a member of the public and damage to the artificial cricket pitch, the Rec committee have decided that E -scooters and E-bikes are not allowed to be ridden on the Rec site.

This is for the safety of all who use the Rec and to prevent any future damage.

As part of our maintenance programme at the Recreation Centre, granular fertiliser is applied 3 times a year to the grass playing areas.

We use a contractor to do this work so we are in their hands as to when this happens, but we ask them to do this work outside of the school holidays.

We will consider the best way to inform the community when this work happens.

THANK YOU from the Recreation Centre Trustees (the people who oversee the Recreation Centre Charity for the benefit of the village), to all those who helped to make the Carnival such a success yesterday and other events such as the Annual Art Exhibition: the Carnival Committee who worked throughout the year to put the Carnival on, the volunteers who helped on the day on all the tasks that needed doing and to all of you who turned up, be it to run a stall or just the experience the event and contribute to a wonderful occasion. To anyone / group / event that I have not mentioned, sorry and thank you.

It costs over £70,000 a year to manage the Recreation Centre. Our income is from leasing the Sports Bar & Sports Hall to ‘The Rec – Copmanthorpe’, from the ‘Copmanthorpe Childcare Centre’, along with contributions from the ‘User Groups’ who are based at the Recreation Centre and grants that we are fortunate to receive.

Without the money raised at the Carnival we would have a significant shortfall. So again, a BIG THANK YOU TO ALL.

Can we please remind you that in order to comply with the Carnival Day licence, the following can't be brought onto the Recreation Centre Grounds:

• Alcohol (this must be bought from the on-site sellers)
• Glassware
• Dogs (except guide and hearing dogs)
