As shown in the diagram below, in order to be successful in obtaining the full grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to repair Aughton Church, we need to gain its approval for 3 main stages of application. Each submission must be approved by NLHF before the next can be considered. If approval is not received for any particular stage, the bid cannot proceed.

Our first submission was an Expression Of Interest (EOI Phase 1 Bid) last year. NLHF approved that and we were invited to complete a submission for Phase 2.

We’re delighted to announce that we have now submitted our bid Phase 2 to NLHF for approval. This bid includes funding for our Development Phase and indicates the first cut of our Delivery Phase cost and timescales.

We understand we will have NLHF’s decision on his second phase later in 2026. If successful, we will commence the Development Phase which will pilot numerous community activities and refine building costs. This will enable us to submit the final bid in 2028 which details results of our Development phase activities and defines building costs and timescales for the Delivery phase which have been refined during detailed work in the Development Phase.
If we do succeed, building work could start by late 2028 / early 2029.

Many of you will know we're in the process of applying for funds from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to undertake urgent conservation works to repair the church and open up access to its unique built and natural heritage. The diagram shows the top level timetable for the various stages of our submission. Next stage submission deadline is 28th May 2026. A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of this submission - fingers firmly crossed we will succeed!

Bishop Welbourne will be visiting Aughton Church at 16:30 on 6th June. He lived in Aughton with his parents in the 1960s.
