Exon’s cleft was totally unexpected. Even the ultrasounds couldn’t detect it because he always covered his mouth with his tiny hand.

When he was born, his midwife immediately reassured his mother, Silvia, and encouraged her to seek the specialised cleft care he needed. The family searched for months without success, until a local journalist told them about Esperanza de Vida, a local Smile Train partner in Guatemala.

After a six-hour journey, they were welcomed with open arms, and Exon finally received the life-changing surgery he deserved.

Today, Exon is smiling brighter than ever and his joy has filled his whole family with hope.

When Elieth was born with a cleft in Panama, her parents feared she wouldn’t survive her first weeks. After a desperate search for help, they finally found the answer right in their own city at Clínica Hospital Jesús Nazareno.

Through our local partner, Elieth received free, lifesaving surgeries and other ongoing comprehensive cleft care, including speech therapy. Dr Julio Gonzalez and his team didn’t just provide treatment: they stayed by the family’s side, giving them encouragement and support during every anxious moment.

Today, Elieth is a joyful three-year-old who loves her older brothers more than anything in the world. Her journey proves how, by empowering local experts, Smile Train brings hope and healing directly to the heart of communities.

Meet Hasib from Bangladesh! 🇧🇩

When Hasib was born with a cleft, his mother, Fatema, felt heartbroken and lost. Raising four children on her own while running a small vegetable stall, she worried she would ever be able to afford the surgery her son needed.

Facing stigma in her community, Fatema held on to hope until a kind neighbour, Ruby, told her that Nargis Memorial Hospital in Khulna offered free cleft surgeries thanks to Smile Train. At two years old, Hasib received the surgery that changed his life.

“I cried out of joy when I saw his new smile,” Fatema shared. “Now he’s healthy and always playing football. His siblings protect him, and he dreams of studying abroad one day.”

Smiles are a universal language, but every one is unique.

This Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week, we are sharing journeys of resilience, hope, and transformation from our global community. These heroes teach us that:

❤️1. Love is always stronger than stigma: Even in the hardest moments, Nyanchiek’s mother never gave up on her daughter.
✨2. Confidence grows when we embrace our differences: By sharing his story with pride, Juan inspired his community to choose inclusion over stigma.
🤝3. The right support makes children thrive: Comprehensive cleft care gave Victoria the confidence to reveal who she’d always been inside.
🎤4. Every voice deserves to be heard: After years of silence, specialised speech treatment gave Susanna the confidence to find her voice.
💙5. A smile can change a life: Wang Li’s journey from shy child to confident mother shows how cleft care can unlock true potential.
💫6. It’s never too late to dream: Maria had been waiting for cleft surgery since 1953. At age 65, she found her smile, thanks to Smile Train.
