Meet Hasib from Bangladesh! 🇧🇩

When Hasib was born with a cleft, his mother, Fatema, felt heartbroken and lost. Raising four children on her own while running a small vegetable stall, she worried she would ever be able to afford the surgery her son needed.

Facing stigma in her community, Fatema held on to hope until a kind neighbour, Ruby, told her that Nargis Memorial Hospital in Khulna offered free cleft surgeries thanks to Smile Train. At two years old, Hasib received the surgery that changed his life.

“I cried out of joy when I saw his new smile,” Fatema shared. “Now he’s healthy and always playing football. His siblings protect him, and he dreams of studying abroad one day.”

Smiles are a universal language, but every one is unique.

This Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week, we are sharing journeys of resilience, hope, and transformation from our global community. These heroes teach us that:

❤️1. Love is always stronger than stigma: Even in the hardest moments, Nyanchiek’s mother never gave up on her daughter.
✨2. Confidence grows when we embrace our differences: By sharing his story with pride, Juan inspired his community to choose inclusion over stigma.
🤝3. The right support makes children thrive: Comprehensive cleft care gave Victoria the confidence to reveal who she’d always been inside.
🎤4. Every voice deserves to be heard: After years of silence, specialised speech treatment gave Susanna the confidence to find her voice.
💙5. A smile can change a life: Wang Li’s journey from shy child to confident mother shows how cleft care can unlock true potential.
💫6. It’s never too late to dream: Maria had been waiting for cleft surgery since 1953. At age 65, she found her smile, thanks to Smile Train.

At Smile Train, we believe training is key to lasting impact. 💙

Since 1999, we have provided tens of thousands of scholarships, workshops, surgical training resources, and symposiums to surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and other medical professionals around the world to help them better treat children with clefts.

By strengthening local expertise, we help bring safe, high-quality cleft care closer to those who need it most.

Whether at work or at home, everything comes back to family for Smile Train partner Payal Ahuja. 💙

With years of training and experience, including completing several Smile Train-led programmes, Payal has become one of India’s leading cleft-specialised speech-language pathologists.

Her passion lies in helping children express themselves with confidence and clarity. But the most valuable skill she brings to her work is one she first learned at home: the art of listening.

She teaches parents how to listen closely to their child’s speech so they can identify and address challenges early, before they develop into long-term difficulties.

Her proactive approach helps reduce the need for years of speech therapy after surgery, giving children a stronger foundation for their future.

This Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week, we are highlighting what makes our model uniquely effective.

Smile Train believes lasting change comes from empowering local medical professionals. Instead of sending outside doctors on short-term missions, we train and support local medical teams to provide high-quality care in their own communities every day of the year.

Cleft care goes far beyond surgery. It is a journey that can include speech services, nutritional support, dental care, psychosocial support, and more.

By strengthening local expertise and raising awareness, we are working to ensure everyone can smile, thrive, and access the care they deserve. ✨
