Impromptu speaking: Love it or hate it?

One of the main competitions held at our National Conference is what we call Topics, AKA impromptu speaking. Competitors are given a topic and have to walk to the front of the room and deliver a polished speech on the subject of the topic.

Sound terrifying? Well, a lot of our speakers feel that way when they start out, and it is something we practice a lot at club level. In the working world, it is one of the most important skills to have, and the more you practice, the better you get. Of course, there are all sorts of hacks that you learn along the way, too, which means when you're put on the spot at that meeting or event, you're able to deliver a coherent response.

All that aside, good luck to our national competitors. It's a great competition to watch, even if it's just a little daunting to take part in.

This year, our National Competitions will be held in Brighton in April. Leave us a message for more information.

At Conference, we hold the following competitions, which are the national finals of a series of regional, area and club competitions which have taken place across the country:

Evaluation: this is what others may describe as giving feedback. Competitors must listen to a speech and then deliver a well-structured, constructive and insightful appraisal.

Topics: AKA impromptu speaking, when speakers are given the topic about which to speak and then immediately have to deliver a short but well-structured speech around that subject.

Team speaking: a competition that has proved to be a lot of fun recently, is the team speaking contest. Open to anyone (for other competitions, you have to first qualify at club, area and regional level), the team of four have to devise a series of short speeches based around three words.

If this has aroused your curiosity, or if you are interested in developing your public speaking skills, why not get in touch? We have clubs across the country.

Well done to all speakers and our organiser. An enjoyable afternoon listening to some great speeches - informative and entertaining. At every event with Speakers Club, I learn. Not only from the amazing speeches but from the evaluations and I am improving my public speaking.
Chris Clisssit from Wetherby won the Evaluation contest and will be going forward to the National competition at the conference in April. Neil Wilson was the runner up and will be there to support.
Thank you to all the ushers, time keepers, and especially the judges.
