**In Memoriam: Peter Wilson**

We're sad to share that Peter Wilson, a much-loved and long-standing member of Wetherby Speakers Club, passed away on 16th July 2026.

As our longest-serving member, Peter was the "father of the club" — warm, wise, and endlessly generous with his time and encouragement. He helped countless members become better speakers, served as Club President twice (1988–89 and 2018–20), and was, fittingly, the club's reigning After Dinner Speech Contest champion, having won again just months ago in March 2026.

He joined WSC in 1984 to find his voice in business meetings... and ended up transforming not just his own speaking, but that of everyone around him.

Peter will be deeply missed. 💙

Our new member, Barbara, speaking confidently and amusing us with her tales of FBI negotiations. We are all very impressed with her gains and accomplishments in such a short time and look forward to more great speeches next year. And all in her second language! Well done!

We had our last face to face meeting of the season last week with a zoom AGM next week.
After an interesting and varied year, we retreat for the summer to reconvene in September. We have heard many fascinating speeches, been trained on vocal exercises and how to write speeches, practised our impromptu speeches and had a lot of fun along the way. We are pleased to welcome new members, including Barbara, John and Jo while the ‘old’ continue on.
Thank you to Barbara for her wonderful article in the Association of Speakers Clubs national magazine and her post on instagram.
Watch out for more news when we return and our activities preparing for speeches next year.
Would you like to share speeches; stories, knowledge, training, or would you like to improve your ability to speak confidently to anyone or any group?

Our first speaker for the evening, Barbara Lazcano, and looking very smart, our evaluator for the evening, John Holian.
Next meeting is the last for this season and we start again in the Autumn.

Wonderful meeting on Thursday. I am always surprised the things I learn each meeting. This time it was FBI negotiation skills and all about Japan culture.
And how to become a better speaker!
Our president, Niki Boersma and chairman for the evening, Peter Wilson.
