What’s that thing then?
It may not seem like anything exciting at the moment, but this unsightly mound is the beginning of a fabulous butterfly, bee and beetle bank. Sand and limestone will be added to provide nesting and resting areas for bees and butterflies. Whilst further soil covering will enable more wildflowers to be sown and planted to attract pollinators.
Butterflies and moths are among the most threatened groups of wildlife in the UK. So this proposed Bank creates an otherwise rare habitat, ensuring insects and animals can safely travel between areas to feed and breed. It also provides habitat during winter for invertebrates like bees, beetles and spiders.
Through the spring and summer they will spread out onto the surrounding land and gardens to feed on aphids and other crop pests.
