How should this look in Caia Park?

---

Starmer says:

'..for too long proud communities have been failed by politics and left powerless to do anything about it.

Our Pride in Place programme changes that. We are giving people the power to build up their communities.

We’ve already invested thousands into communities across Britain. Now, we are giving thousands more the opportunity to transform their local area.

Putting local people in control and building a Britain that works for all.'

---

The £20m awarded to Wrexham to deliver this change in approach is controlled by Wrexham City Board. What message would you send them about priorities for Caia?

I love this country. It is the greatest country in the world.

We are tolerant, decent and respectful – and unity is our strength.

But for too long, proud communities have been failed by politics and left powerless to do anything about it.

Our Pride in Place programme changes that. We are giving people the power to build up their communities. We’ve already invested thousands into communities across Britain. Now, we are giving thousands more the opportunity to transform their local area.

So Wrexham's £20m 'Plan for Neighbourhoods' programme is now to be called Wrexham's £20m 'Pride in Place' programme. The UK Government has just provided new guidance to ensure it's not just a rebrand...and that it shifts towards real resident-leadership.

Within the introduction it says:

'The Programme goes further than anything we have done before, giving communities the resources and tools to drive change themselves and shape their neighbourhoods for the better. Local residents know what changes their areas need, and that is why communities will be leading the delivery of the programme, calling the shots on how funding is spent. This community-led approach means that decision-making power sits squarely with local residents, giving people the power to shape the future of their areas.'

Following on from the post about the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2025 here are the maps that show the streets that are included in each of the areas.

The maps are from 2021 and don't reflect the fact that Smithfield has now been divided into two areas for the purpose of the Index - called Smithfield 2 and Smithfield 3.

Last week saw the Welsh Government publish the latest Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation. The index ranks 1,917 small areas of Wrexham (averaging around 1,600 people) from 'most' to 'least' deprived.

There's loads of information about how the Index is constructed, how to understand it, its limitations on use, comparability with the previous published indices (2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, & 2019), etc, here - https://www.gov.wales/welsh-index-multiple-deprivation-2025-series

All of Caia's 8 'lower super output areas' are statistically in the most deprived half of the index, and here's a table showing them alongside the other areas of Wrexham that share the same half of the table.

----

3 of Caia's areas are in the most deprived 10% in Wales, with Queensway 1 being 7th most deprived out of the 1917 areas in Wales. Queensway 1 has been in the most deprived 10% in every publication of the index, and is one of a small number of communities across Wales considered to have 'deep-rooted deprivation'.

2 of our areas are in the 10-20% group, and 2 are in the 20-30% group. Part of Whitegate is in the 30-50% group. None are in the least deprived half of the index.

Wrexham City Board are progressing with the 10 year 'Plan for Neighbourhoods' by focussing on the economic development of the town centre and building a new central youth facility.

Caia Park is outside of the main investment area for this £20m of UK government funding, but within the wider area of intended benefit.

The article below explains more, and it contains a link to the Plan itself.

UK government's guidance - which outlines the sort of things the money can be used for - can be found by searching for 'Plan for Neighbourhoods' or 'Pride in Place' online.

We're hoping that the months ahead can see a series of local conversations about the priorities residents see for Caia, and to find ways of helping the City Board to use some of their funds here.

Wrexham City Board say new £20m plan is “creating meaningful, sustainable change” Wrexham City Board says now is the moment to turn the city’s confidence into concrete opportunity and is positioning itself early to make every day count before major UK Government money starts flowing in 2026. ...

Hello. I'm Gary and I work at Caia Park Partnership. I'm one of the people who's been working behind the scenes for a few years trying to work out how we can bring residents and local organisations closer together to make a difference in Caia.

In 2022 we had some support from the People's Health Trust to work this 'co-production' idea up, and in July 2023 over 60 people came together at a conference in Ysgol Hafod Y Wern to look at our area's strengths, concerns and priorities.

This resulted in the graphic below - which set out some initial themes and priorities. In 2024 we worked to secure funding to employ a dedicated worker to take this further; sadly we failed (multiple times), and although there's been lots of ongoing 'talk' about this work there's not yet been any visible action.

That is set to change now thanks to a £2,500 grant from the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration. This is funding a 6-week series of 'drop-in' sessions at venues across the Park, starting in mid October 2025, and we'll use the findings of these sessions as the basis for another conference. My colleague Steve will be leading these.

Meanwhile, we are continuing to work to influence the work of the Wrexham City Board who are managing a 10 year budget of £20m to support economic growth in the City Centre - which we believe can bring benefits to Caia Park.

With any luck, this will provide a way to resource further conversations between the people who live here and those who work for organisations trying to help, and in doing so unlock ways of improving the services, facilities and events that residents have access to. Unfortunately, this sort of obvious interaction still doesn't happen routinely and needs facilitating, at least initially.
