We were delighted to celebrate the success of three outstanding students. Shadreck Pemphero (Dzenza Secondary School), George Sandalamu (Chadza Boarding Secondary School) and Jacqueline Charles (Nambuma Boarding Secondary School) were among the top ten students in their respective classes. In a wonderful ceremony, the Chiefs presented awards to the highest-performing students, recognising their hard work, dedication and academic achievements.

Congratulations to all three students! We wish you every success in your continued studies. 💚

For the first time ever, St Martin’s now has its own heavy-duty printer, thanks to funding from the Gumbi Education Fund. This will make a real difference to students and staff at the school. Instead of travelling all the way from Nambuma to town to print important documents, St Martin’s can now print exams, assignments and other essential materials on site. It's a practical investment that will save time, reduce travel and make everyday learning at St Martin’s that little bit easier. We’re delighted to have been able to support St Martin’s with this important piece of equipment, and are very grateful to all our GEF supporters. A big step forward for St Martin’s!

🌟 Student spotlight: Meet Salomy Kazembe 🌟

We're proud to introduce Salomy Kazembe, a first year Mathematical Sciences Education student at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences. Salomy is the first girl from her village, Mguwata, to go to university. Growing up, many of her classmates believed science subjects were "for boys." Salomy disagreed and worked hard to prove them wrong, excelling all the way to a place at university where she is challenging the status quo and following her dream to become a maths lecturer, in a field where most of her own professors are men.

Gumbi Education Fund covered all four years of Salomy's secondary school fees and helped her buy a second-hand phone so she could keep up with university life, where everything now runs through WhatsApp and email.

Back home, her parents' house still has no access to solar power or the electricity grid. While her university friends spend their holidays with lights and TV after dark, Salomy relies on daylight alone. Last year, Salomy was one of 20 girls among the 37 boarding school secondary students GEF supports and her story is inspiring to other girls in her area. She joins Triphonia as the second female university student that GEF supports.

Requests for support keep growing every year, and it's getting harder to say yes to every student who needs us. 🌟 Student Spotlight: Meet Triphonia Joseph 🌟

We're proud to introduce Triphonia Joseph, a fourth year Business Administration student at the Centre for Research and Training College. With the support of GEF, Triphonia became the first young woman from her local community to attend university. Her journey is a powerful example of how education can break barriers, inspire others, and create opportunities for the next generation of girls.

In Triphonia's own words "My university journey has not always been easy, but it has been one of perseverance, hope, and determination. There were times when financial challenges made it difficult to continue my education, and I was uncertain about my future. However, with the support of GEF, I was given the opportunity to continue pursuing my dream of earning a degree in Business Administration and now l am in last semester fourth Year

GEF's support has been life-changing. It has not only helped me with my education but has also given me confidence to believe in my potential and work towards a better future. Every achievement I have made so far has been possible because someone believed in me and invested in my education.

As a young woman in Malawi, I know that many girls face barriers to accessing higher education, including financial constraints, early marriage, and limited opportunities. Supporting girls' education is one of the most powerful ways to transform lives, families, and communities. When girls are educated, they become leaders, role models, and contributors to their country's development.

I am incredibly grateful to GEF and to all the donors whose generosity has made my educational journey possible. Your support is creating opportunities for young women like me to achieve our dreams and make a positive impact in our communities. I hope my story encourages others to continue investing in girls' education and inspires more young women to believe that, despite the challenges they may face, their dreams are achievable.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Meet Calvin Mwanjeni 🌟

We're proud to introduce Calvin Mwanjeni, a first-year Community Health Nursing student at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

In Calvin's own words: "My name is Calvin Mwanjeni, and I am a first-year student at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, pursuing a degree in Community Health Nursing. I am honored and grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of the Gumbi Education Fund.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Gumbi Education Fund for believing in students like me and investing in our future. Your generous support has given me the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse and serving my community through quality healthcare. Your assistance has reduced the financial burden of university education and has motivated me to work harder in my studies. Because of your support, I can focus on learning, developing my skills, and preparing myself to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of people in Malawi.

I promise to make the most of this opportunity by studying diligently, maintaining good character, and striving for academic excellence. I hope to one day give back to my community and inspire other young people, just as your support has inspired me.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Meet Jasten George 🌟

We're excited to launch a new series highlighting the incredible students whose education is made possible through the support of the Gumbi Education Fund. Each student has a unique story and we hope these stories will give you a glimpse into the real impact your support has on the lives of young people in Malawi.

We're proud to introduce Jasten George, a first-year Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing student at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

In Jasten's own words: "Beginning my university journey has been both exciting and challenging, and every day I am learning new skills and gaining knowledge that will help me become a compassionate and dedicated mental health nurse. I chose this profession because I want to make a positive difference in the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges and promote hope, dignity, and quality care. I am deeply grateful to Gumbi for believing in me and supporting my education financially. Your generosity has eased the burden of university expenses and allowed me to focus more on my studies and personal growth. This support is not only an investment in my education but also in my future and in the lives of the many people I hope to serve as a nurse. Being part of the Gumbi community has been a truly rewarding experience. The encouragement, kindness, and sense of belonging I have received has inspired me to work hard, remain determined, and pursue my dreams with confidence. As PCTC continues to expand its reach, the time has come to a give its name a professional visual identity. The Gumbi Permaculture Community Training Centre is proud to present its official logo to the public.

The logo incorporates the Triquetra, representing interconnectedness, unity, and eternity, which is at the heart of the mission. 🌱

On 18th April, James and Chipiliro visited Gumbi to meet with GEF students and their parents, creating space for meaningful conversations about how to make the most of educational opportunities. 🌱

James shared his thoughts: “We had a really wonderful day with our GEF students and some parents. We met at PCTC, and the day began with a warm cup of lemongrass tea.”

Lead farmer Martin plays a vital role in keeping the farm thriving, from daily operations to sharing knowledge through workshops with local farmers.

PCTC is dedicated to empowering communities with the skills and knowledge of permaculture. Today 525 homestead farmers across 22 villages are putting these permaculture practices into action, creating lasting change. Chipiliro also plays an important role in supporting and delivering homestead farmer training.

Through sustainable farming, biodiversity conservation, reforestation, clean energy, and climate-resilient practices, theses homestead farmers are working towards long-term food security and a healthier, more balanced ecosystem in Malawi.
