Tick awareness: staying safe in the countryside this summer

BASC’s deer officer James Sutcliffe explains that while small in size, ticks can pose a significant health risk, making awareness and vigilance essential.

For many who spend time in the countryside, ticks are an unwelcome but familiar part of life. Whether encountering them while stalking through bracken, working on the hill, or carefully removing them from a dog after a walk, these tiny parasites are an unpleasant reality of being outdoors.

Making game cover crops count

Read all about a small DIY game shoot that has maximised its conservation potential in the latest instalment of our Four Seasons campaign.

There is so much that can be said about this inspiring shoot – restoring ancient woodland, planting new woods, ponds and species-rich grassland restoration – but for this case study, the focus is on the shoot’s game cover crops.

Much of the shoot is woodland, so the available space to provide game cover crops was much less than on a typical lowland shoot.

🌳Help gather evidence on grey squirrel bark stripping🌳

🥜Grey squirrels cause extensive damage to trees across the UK, but there is still much to learn about where bark stripping occurs and why some woods are affected more than others.

🥜UK Squirrel Accord is asking landowners, woodland managers and volunteers with permission to take part in the Grey Squirrel Activity & Impact Assessment to help build a clearer national picture of bark stripping damage.

BASC strongly opposes the government's proposed ban on trail hunting. In addition to prohibiting trail hunting, the proposals would have serious unintended consequences for working dogs across the board.

The current consultation proposals threaten the use of dogs for tracking wounded deer, predator and pest control, gundog training, field trials and vital conservation and wildlife detection work.

You can help to fight the trail hunting ban by doing the following:
✅ Respond to the consultation
✅ Tell Defra why working dogs must not become collateral damage in the proposals
✅ Get your response in before the consultation closes on 18 June

Every response counts. Read more and take action: https://basc.org.uk/trail-hunting-ban-will-have-unintended-consequences-for-working-dogs/
