💡 What It’s About

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is held every year on the third Thursday of May — in 2026, that’s May 21. It’s a worldwide initiative that shines a light on digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities. The day encourages designers, developers, and organizations to think about how technology can be made usable by everyone, regardless of ability.

🔍 Core Purpose

GAAD began in 2012 as a grassroots movement and has grown into a global campaign. Its mission is to:
- Raise awareness of barriers faced by people with disabilities online.
- Promote inclusive design across websites, apps, and digital tools.
- Encourage action — from testing accessibility features to improving standards in workplaces and communities.

🧭 Why It Matters

Digital accessibility isn’t just a technical issue — it’s a human rights issue. When websites, apps, and devices are accessible, they empower independence, education, employment, and social connection. GAAD reminds us that inclusion starts with design choices: colour contrast, readable fonts, captions, keyboard navigation, and screen‑reader compatibility.

🏙️ Accessible Wrexham Connection

Accessible Wrexham aligns perfectly with GAAD’s goals — advocating for clear signage, sensory‑friendly spaces, and digital accessibility standards across local venues and organizations. The purple‑themed campaign you created embodies that commitment to visibility and inclusion.

✨ How to Get Involved
- Host or attend an accessibility workshop.
- Audit your website using WCAG 2.2 guidelines.
- Share stories of lived experience under the hashtag.
- Encourage colleagues to take part in inclusive design challenges.

Today we held our 5th Accessible Wrexham meeting, and what an incredibly productive and positive afternoon it was.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed their lived experiences, ideas, and feedback.

A special thank you to Roxy from RCS for delivering an excellent discussion around accessibility within job recruitment websites and inclusive employment pathways. RCS is currently developing an accessible recruitment platform, and the discussion sparked valuable conversations around digital accessibility and removing barriers within employment.

Roxy also extended an invitation to Accessible Wrexham members to contribute ideas for a name for RCS’s new accessible job recruitment website. If anyone has any suggestions, please email them to me and I will forward them on to RCS for consideration.

We also discussed the Accessible Wrexham checklist, and we are pleased to share that Steve Dooré has kindly agreed to share this publicly with the NHS once it has been given the green light.

In addition, discussions took place around a recent walkabout with Andrew Ranger - MP for Wrexham and a constituent with a visual impairment, highlighting real accessibility barriers within the city centre. Following this, I will also be exploring the possibility of arranging a wheelchair user walkabout to further highlight lived experience from a mobility perspective.

We also discussed an important new initiative being established by Steve Dooré, who is bringing together a cross-sector group working with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to address health inequalities in healthcare and employment for disabled people. The group aims to ensure that Disabled People’s Rights and the Social Model of Disability are embedded at the heart of planning and service delivery. I am incredibly grateful to have been invited to contribute to this work and will carefully consider how Accessible Wrexham may be able to engage with and support this important initiative moving forward.

Accessible Wrexham continues to grow from strength to strength, and we are incredibly proud of the collaborative work taking place across our community.

The next Accessible Wrexham meeting date is currently TBC and will be shared in due course.

Meeting minutes will be sent out by Monday.

I’ve had some brilliant news from Wrexham Libraries! 👏

Sensory bags are now available across all Wrexham libraries.

These bags include a range of sensory fidget items and ear defenders for children, as well as sensory resources for people living with dementia. They can be requested from staff, used during your visit, and returned before you leave.

Thank you for taking the suggestion on board — it’s great to see how quickly this has been implemented and rolled out.

This is such an important step in making library spaces more accessible and inclusive for everyone. đź’ś

Sensory bags in your local library
Wrexham Libraries, with funding from the Welsh Government, is delighted to be able to provide sensory bags designed to support children, caregivers, and individuals with additional needs across the county. Each library has sensory bags available to use during your time within the library and contain fidget toys to stimulate the senses making visits calmer and more accessible. These bags can be used by anyone aged 3 or above. Please ask for a bag at the library counter and please return it before you leave the library. These bags make our service more welcoming for all with additional needs. If you don’t have your own or have forgotten them you can still come in and use ours. Please ask staff for more details.

Thank you ever so much to Wrexham Libraries for taking on my suggestion of supplying sensory packs to visitors.

Being able to suggest this through my work with Accessible Wrexham makes it even more meaningful. Accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of everything I do, and seeing changes like this being embraced helps create spaces where disabled and neurodivergent people feel welcomed, understood, and supported. It’s a really positive step forward for our community. 💜.
