SAVE THE DATE. Sunday 1st March 10am to 12 noon in Wotton Community PARC. We will be clearing as many of the plastic guards which have degraded over the years as we can from around some of the 8,000 trees that we have planted in the last 20 years. Some of the close-planted trees now stand over 10m tall and are a haven for the wildlife in the PARC. Some were planted further apart to create space to run, picnic and find shade. And many of them now help take up the plentiful surface water which is such a feature of our soil! Wellies, gloves and eye protection to get in amongst the trees will be needed as we try to remove as much plastic as we can. Do come and join us - just turn up and we'll organise the search and the removal of all we find. See you there.

Next up.....
It's part 3 with Rosie Craggs!
WCSF....Hi Rosie! Thank you for representing the skatepark and giving us an exciting insight in to the facilities.
First up, when was the skatepark built?
RC...Built in 2015 I believe, I've became more involved in the last couple of years.
WCSF....What does the skatepark have to offer?
RC...Great mid-sized full concrete plaza style park, including flat banks, quarter pipes, ledges, rails and box. Suitable for all ages with gazebo for nearby seating as well as car parking and tarmac path access. A number of people have told us how unusual it is to find a skatepark of this quality outside of larger urban areas, so we're really lucky to have it!
WCSF...I must admit, I'm rather jealous it wasn't around when I was younger! So how busy is the skatepark, and what ages use it?
RC...Really well used so long as it's not raining! Depending on time of day and week we see everyone from adult users practicing tricks to parents with toddlers on push bikes and micro scooters. Welcoming to all, including skateboarding and scooters and with a really friendly and inclusive atmosphere I've seen from older users towards learners.
WCSF...I've always enjoyed seeing the wide range of ages that I see enjoying the skatepark. What future developments or maintenance are needed for the facility?
Some maintenance was carried out recently for us by a local contractor carrying out other highways work in the area, as well as maintenance of the gazebo. Concrete skateparks are designed to take a lot, but we'd live to be able to install a couple of benches so that visitors not actively skating can have somewhere adjacent to the park to sit. Anyone who wants to sponsor or donate a suitable outdoor bench - we'd love to talk to them!
Additionally we'd love to talk to anyone looking to hold events here. In the last couple of years we held a very successful skate event and have been in talks with a local contact with a connection to a UK scooting champion for something similar. We've also had contacts about a possible adult improvers group - everyone is welcome to get in touch so we can develop this as an even better community resource.
WCSF...Thanks Rosie! Amazing insight into to the facilities!
WCSF...What does the WCSF parc mean to you and your family/friends?
RC...For me as a non-skater it's partly that it shows the inclusive nature of the park - as well as the fantastic traditional sports offerings, having the skatepark opens up towards those who might be more interested in alternatives. Having it creates a social gathering space for families, teens and adults which gets people outdoors, off screens and still in the beautiful PARC setting.
Skateboarding has long been part of a liminal social space catering to people not just from the sport/ activity point of view but can also connect back through music and arts cultural links to an important part of a wider community so that no one feels excluded.

Thanks Rosie, amazing job 👏

Next up, it's part 2 with our second guest!
We welcome Mike Marshall from Wotton Rovers FC. Another great chance to see what the WCSF means to us!
WCSF....Thanks for your time Mike! As a member of Wotton Rovers seniors, I'm delighted to have this opportunity to thank you for your years of fantastic work. Lets get into the 5 in 5.....
What year did you join Wotton Rovers Youth FC ?
Mike....I started helping out in 2013 when my son Tom started playing, Nick Ford was running the u6's training and was asking for parents to help out, Nick was brilliant at getting the parents involved and then setting us up to take over the team at u7's.

WCSF....How far have the facilities developed, and how has the club grown?
Mike.... The 7 aside 3G pitch in Wotton Community PARC had recently been built with funds donated by Sir David McMurtry when I joined, so the u6's to u10's had good match facilities, but the older age groups were reliant on poor school pitches. I was able to get funding to build the 9v9 size Lesley Ford and youth 11v11 Nick Ford pitches which included drainage and more recently the full size pitch in the PARC, those have been game changing for the youth footy club, having reliable pitches which we control has massively improved both our match day experiences and training sessions. I've also been involved in building both car parks, the footbridge and the containers compound. The compound has given us the space to manage our kit and store goals for training, much better than the poles and cones we had to use before.
WCSF..... So fitting that Nick and Lesley Ford have been honoured in such a way. Such phenomenal people who have done so much.
Next up, Proudest moment?
Mike.... Building the 3 grass pitches was incredibly satisfying and to have the full size pitch named after me was a huge honour, but it's what they have enabled that gives me most pride. Seeing all those kids enjoying their football and the the opportunity the space gives to host a tournament every June with well over a 100 teams taking part. It was at last years tournament when I coached my unfancied u17's to victory which gave me a sporting highlight. Representing WCSF at a Buckingham Palace garden party as part of the groups Kings Award for Voluntary Service wasn't bad either.
WCSF.... What do you hope for regarding future developments?
Mike...I've have been working on a project to build a clubhouse/community space in the PARC for about 5 years, the brief, scale and costs have changed quite a bit along the way, but it looks like this is a real possibility this year, it would be fantastic to get this over the line.
WCSF....What does Wotton Community Sports Foundation/the PARC mean to you?
Mike....I love spending time in the PARC, seeing what has been achieved and dreaming of what's to come. Sarah Watt has done an amazing job developing the sensory garden, the community orchard is starting to mature, and there is more to come. We are lucky to have such a space, not just for all the Football, Hockey, Rugby, parkrun, skateboarding and BMX that goes on, but for all the other community groups who use the PARC.

WCSF.....Thanks for the time Mike. The work you do for the youth is appreciated. It's a fitting honour to have the new pitch in your name. A legacy you should enjoy 👏 👏 👏

We bring you the first in the series! With the local sporting legend, Stuart Emms, here's 5 in 5. This gives you a personal insight into what WCSF means to us!
Hi Stu, we are delighted you agreed to be the opening interview. You are someone who has done so much for Wotton sport.

1.What year did you first represent Wotton at sport, and which Wotton youth/adult sides have you played for?

A long, long time ago…! Probably when I was around 8 or 9 (so 1983/84?) playing for Wotton Rovers ⚽️ under the tutelage of local football legends like Tony Thorpe and Kev Matthews. Soon after that I started playing hockey while at Blue Coat School and had to make a choice when fixtures began to clash. I chose hockey over football which for anyone who’s seen me play football was probably a wise choice!

Thanks to the energy of the likes of Chris White, Verity Small & Les Marsh, Wotton under Edge Cricket Club 🏏 (now sadly defunct!) started an u18 team in the early 90s and we also began playing for the Sunday and league teams. Great memories of playing cricket at Symn Lane - before the decided to build a school on it!!! 😢 I played occasionally while at Uni and then had the privilege of captaining the 2nd XI in the late 90s

After years playing hockey 🏑 for KLB, made my debut for Wotton Hockey in 91/92 and then became much more heavily involved on and off the pitch when I moved back to the area in 1998.

2. How have the facilities developed and how have the numbers grown? (Wotton Hockey Club)

Due to the availability of astro pitches we led a nomadic lifestyle but still had lots of success as a club before the move to the PARC back in 2013/14; but there’s no doubt being able to truly play ‘at home’ has been massive for us.

We now field 7 senior teams on a Saturday and the success of our junior/youth sections makes us one of the biggest clubs in the County. We are proud that our Men’s 1st XI is now back in the West Prem, and we’ve nurtured several youth internationals but we are equally proud that we offer ‘hockey for all’

3. Proudest moment?

Though I played for years I think my proudest moments have come as a coach and a parent!

Helping establish and coach the ladies teams in their early years (2005/06) makes me very proud of what we started when I see where they are now. Drop out rates for teenage girls in sport are a massive problem but the hockey club continues to buck that trend which is great for us and the local community.

As a parent seeing Charlie and his team get to numerous national finals and winning the National Indoor u16 title a few years ago is right up there.

4. What do you Hope for in the future regarding Wotton sport?

That the facilities continue to develop and that the public continue to see the positive impact all of our brilliant local sports clubs have on the local community.

Having been on various committees in the 90s & 2000s where it felt like we might never get things off the ground; when you are down there on a Saturday and there’s a full programme of football, hockey and rugby on it feels pretty good reflecting on how far it’s come

5. What does Wotton sport mean to you? (What has it given you)

I’m unashamedly sentimental about this…nothing beats playing for your home town club. Now we play at the PARC, wearing that crest on your shirt and playing in the shadow of Wotton Hill; doesn’t get better than that. My kids have now played for several of the local clubs too so that makes me very proud.

I’ve been able to play, coach and work behind the scenes for the hockey club and hopefully play a small part in handing on the baton for generations to come

Many thanks Stu, thank you from everyone in the Town for your remarkable efforts over the years. Local legend!
