For us, this is what partnership is all about. It’s about listening, respecting local knowledge and working together to achieve something that benefits everyone. Our UK volunteers bring their own experience and ideas, but they learn just as much from the Tanzanian dentists and Dental Therapists they work alongside. By combining international experience with local knowledge, the training becomes relevant, practical and, most importantly, useful in the environment in which the Dental Therapists work every day.

Over the last two days we’ve had the honour and pleasure to be joined by Dr Nzobo, Assistant Director of Oral Health Services and Dr Berege, President of the Tanzanian Dental Association. We have a deep gratitude for their continued support and kind words of encouragement to our volunteers, our Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) partners, our Tanzanian dental colleagues and, of course, our Dental Therapists. We're really looking forward to Dr Gordian from our partners - thedi.or.tz - travelling around the UK with us over the next couple of weeks.

Week 2 day at Buhingo and everyone is in their stride. There are lots of children from the local school today as well as the daily high demand for dentures. I’m always amazed by un-fazed our volunteers are at delivering dentistry outside their usual high tech environments. Every single time they just roll their (metaphorical) sleeves up and just get on with the job as if they’d been doing it all their lives, we’re grateful to them all for their willingness to adapt. 🙏

How can week 1 have ended so quickly?
This week we’ve treated 872 patients. Treatments have ranged from extractions, fillings, RCT’s, scalings to providing partial dentures. Some of our team are leaving to travel home this weekend but, without a shadow of a doubt they’ll be taking a piece of Tanzania home with them in their hearts. A huge thank you to our ‘village’ who’ve welcomed and looked after this week. We couldn’t be luckier than to work alongside our Tanzania Health Environment and Development Initiatives (THEDI) partners and Tanzanian dental colleagues. Asante Sana 🙏
