Bees Abroad

Bees Abroad Developing sustainable community beekeeping businesses through training and continued support.

Relieving poverty through beekeeping, we transfer our skills to young people, women, children who need to create a sustainable income.

One in three bites of food on your plate, bees made that possible.

Today we celebrate them, and the 6,000+ beekeepers across Africa who work alongside them every day.

A huge congratulations to our partners at People's Agenda for Development Sierra Leone (PAD-SL) who took home the Humanitarian Service Award at this year's African Ovation Awards in Freetown. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

Recognised for their impact in underserved communities and their unwavering dedication to humanitarian service, this award is thoroughly deserved.

We are proud to call PAD-SL partners and cannot wait to share more about the work we are doing together in Sierra Leone.

Congratulations to Joseph Barnes and the whole team. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Meet Esther Tolorunju. ๐Ÿ

Esther holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics and has spent over a decade researching how smallholder farmers, especially women and young people, build sustainable livelihoods from the land.

Based in Nigeria, she has led projects, trained trainers, and shaped policy across rural development and food security.

At Bees Abroad, she is working directly with communities in Nigeria to help young women and youths turn beekeeping into a real source of income.

Welcome, Esther. We are glad you are here. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

One of The most efficient workforce on the planet doesn't clock in, nor take lunch breaks.

But behind every colony, there's a human worker too.

In Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and beyond - beekeepers are waking up early, suiting up, and doing the quiet, skilled work of building a livelihood from the land.

Today, on Workers' Day, we're celebrating all of them.

The bees, the beekeepers, and the Bees Abroad team (volunteers, trustees, in-country partners, and supporters) who show up every day to make sure that work is sustainable.

Happy International Workers' Day. ๐Ÿ

We did it. ๐ŸŽ‰

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and cheered us on during the Big Give Earth Raise. You've helped take the Rukwaโ€“Katavi Coexistence Programme to new villages, new families, and a future where elephants and communities can thrive side by side.

This is what happens when people show up for nature. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ

Watch this space โ€” the work is just beginning.

22/04/2026

The Big Give Earth Raise is live, from 22โ€“29 April only.

Together with our partner, Wild Survivors, we're supporting a community-led approach to humanโ€“elephant coexistence. By installing hive fences and delivering beekeeping training, we aim to reduce conflict between farmers and elephants and create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

Every donation is match funded. Double your impact today.

Pollen Toss. One of the highlights of our presence at this year's BBKA Spring Convention, and it was created by our very own volunteer, George.

The rules are simple: match the beanbag to the correct flower pollen colour, get 3 out of 5 right, and you're in with a chance to win an NBS beekeeper's toolkit worth ยฃ82. All it takes is a ยฃ3 donation to play.

It's been a hit since the convention started and if you're here at Spring Convention, there's still time to give it a go. Comes find us. ๐ŸŒผ

We're at the BBKA Spring Convention and things are getting a little competitive ๐Ÿโœจ

Come find us, try your hand at Pollen Toss, and walk away with a prize.

No experience necessary ๐Ÿ˜… Just good aim and better vibes.

In communities across Rwanda, beekeeping has been passed down through generations.

But in Ngororero, the young people noticed a gap forming. Their grandparents, the ones who kept the hives, who knew the bees, were getting older. Fewer young people were learning. The knowledge, the colonies, the benefits to local food systems, all at risk of quietly disappearing.

So 31 young men and women came together and founded the Ngororero Young Beekeepers.

They have four apiaries across two villages, rich forest forage, and strong local demand for honey. What they need now is the training, equipment, and mentorship to build something that lasts, and it costs less than 25p a day per person to make that happen.

This is exactly the kind of community-led initiative Bees Abroad was built to support.
