Brighton and Worthing Sands

Brighton and Worthing Sands This support is provided free of charge and is open to all bereaved parents, their families and friends, no matter how long ago the loss occurred.

We are a group of local volunteers offering free help and support to people in the Brighton, Worthing and surrounding areas who have been affected by the loss of a baby, either before, during or shortly after birth. We are a group of local volunteers offering help and support to people in the Brighton, Hove and Worthing area who have been affected by the loss of a baby, either before, during or sh

ortly after birth. As bereaved parents ourselves, we understand the unique pain of losing a baby - the loss of a precious life and the shattering of hopes and dreams - and the confusion and isolation that sometimes accompanies that loss. We have found that often just having someone to talk to who has shared a similar experience can help bereaved parents to feel less isolated and to deal with the confusing emotions they typically experience. As well as offering support through local meetings, befriending and publications, we also aim to improve care for bereaved parents by liaising with local hospitals and other health professionals. We are part of a national charity, called Sands (the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society), which supports anyone affected by the death of a baby and works to reduce the number of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in the UK. If you have been affected by baby loss due to late miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or termination due to abnormalities, call the dedicated befriender mobile phone number on 07502 763863. Please leave a message and one of the befrienders will call you back. This may take a few days, as the befriender service is run by volunteers, who check the messaging service weekly. But please be assured that someone will get back to you. You can also email [email protected] to get in touch with the befrienders. If you would like to attend one of our support groups, please contact us by telephone or email for further details.

Thank you Liz for running a stich workshop during Baby Loss Awareness Week, an opportunity to get together and remember our babies 💕

17/06/2026

Right now, millions of families are coming together to watch the World Cup, but every day in the UK 13 babies die shortly before, during or soon after birth. That’s 13 families every day experiencing the heartbreak of never being able to bring their baby home to enjoy a family moment together like this.

And that’s before we think about the thousands of families experiencing other types of pregnancy and baby loss and TFMR (Termination for Medical Reasons) for which there is no comprehensive publicly available data across the UK.

But where do they turn to for support?

We are the UK’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity. We are working to save babies’ lives and ensure that every parent and every family receive the care and support they need when the worst does happen.

There are still some spaces if you would like to attend the stitch group on Wednesday 17th June, 7.30pm - 9pm.

This will be led by one of our group members and a committee member and is a supportive space to try some simple stitch work whilst talking to each other. It's also a chance to chat with others and remember our babies together. All stitch materials will be provided.

Liz will guide you in how to stich so no previous experience or knowledge is needed. This date falls in Sands Awareness Week so there would be the opportunity to mark the week and stitch something in memory of your baby / babies. You might want to embroider a pattern or perhaps your babies name on to an item that belonged to them, just as examples. You could also include some words or a picture of something.

To run this group, we really need to know numbers. Could anyone that would like to come, please let me know via email as soon as possible and we can make the necessary arrangements - if you have already emailed me about coming then I have you on the list already, thank you.

The group will be in the Shoreham Centre but further details about this will follow. There is paid parking nearby and it is a short walk from Shoreham train station.

Please let us know if you would like to join us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Embroidery Group

One of our group members has kindly offered to run a stitch group where we can get together to complete some simple stitch work whilst talking to each other. This would be a supportive environment to meet other bereaved parents and chat whilst doing some hand embroidery stitching such as text or pictures.

Liz would guide you, so no previous experience or knowledge is needed. This is a way we can get together and support each other after baby loss, whilst also being able to learn something new. Materials will be provided. Some ideas people might want to do in the group might be to embroider their babies names on to an item that belonged to them, or use fabric which is more emotionally neutral. You could also include some words or a picture of something.

This is at the ideas stage and so a venue and date are not yet confirmed - we would like to gauge the interest in this event, so please do let us know if you would like to come to something like this. If there is enough interest, we will find a venue and can potentially run further meetings like this. One of our group members will be leading the stitching and, whilst this is not a support group with a befriender, a committee member will also be present and it will be a supportive, welcoming space.

Please let us know if you would like to join us.
