The Worthing Society , originally the Worthing Civic Society (founded 1973), was formed in 1982. Its main aims are to conserve and preserve the architectural amenities of Worthing and the surrounding area , and to stimulate interest and research into the town’s history. It is concerned principally with conservation and preservation but also operates within broader terms to enhance the present cond

The Worthing Society is launching their Exhibition ‘Pioneers of Worthing’ at Colonnade House on 7th April.

The exhibition is open to the public 10am – 5pm each day and is free.

The exhibition is based on our talk ‘Pioneers of Worthing’ and features a series of short, touchscreen videos, telling the story of each Pioneer and display boards charting the timeline of Worthing’s development starting with Princess Amelia’s visit in 1798. It charts key events up to the modern era and shows photographs of the buildings and pioneers themselves.

Our 17 chosen Pioneers include the figures that Worthing historian Antony Edmonds has called ‘’the 3 most important names in the town’s entire history’’ – Edward ‘King’ Ogle, Thomas Trotter and John Biagio Rebecca. We also feature a librarian, a doctor, hotelier, builder and town clerk amongst many others.

Members of The Worthing Society will be on hand to answer your questions and help navigate the videos. There is an online quiz for those who want to test their knowledge at the end.

During the week we will be hosting guided walks at 2pm on Wednesday 8th and Friday 10th April to show off some of the buildings these pioneers developed and which still stand today. Sue Belton, Chair of the Worthing Society will be giving a talk on the Pioneers on Saturday 11th April at 2pm.

Please do come along and support our event. For more information and if you would like to book on to the walks or talk then please click on the link below:
