European Aerial Dance Festival

European Aerial Dance Festival The European Aerial Dance festival is an inclusive festival providing engagement with aerial dance for people of all levels and abilities.

The European Aerial Dance Festival is the UK’s only aerial training event of its kind, running for 2 weeks in partnership with the wonderful Worthing Pavilion. Up to 30 classes a day to choose from – incl technique classes, creative labs and complementary training – available for professional aerialists, hobbyists and beginners and led by world class teaching talent. The European Aerial Dance Fest

ival was established by Gravity & Levity in 2010 and aims to bring exceptional aerial experiences to every body. EADF was inspired by the original Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Festival in Boulder, Colorado (running since 1998) and a desire to work collaboratively to create something similar for Europe. Lindsey Butcher (Artistic Director, Gravity & Levity), Chantal McCormick (Artistic Director, Fidget Feet Aerial) and Fred Deb (Artistic Director, Drapés Aériens) worked together to create and plan sister festivals: European Aerial Dance Festival (EADF), Irish Aerial Dance Festival (IADF) and Les Rencontres de Danse Aérienne (LRDA), respectively. We owe a big thanks to Nancy Smith in the first instance for imagining the 1st meeting to bring the aerial community together and to Chantal McCormick and Fred Deb for running with the idea of a series of ADF’s around Europe. European Aerial Dance Festival caters to seasoned professional aerial artists working across a range of apparatus as well as offering separate and tailored activity for hobbyists, cross trainers and beginners. Our aim is to create a friendly and encouraging environment for everyone. Find out more about our Level Definitions below. Classes, creative labs and courses incl a breadth of aerial apparatus including: corde lisse, lyra, aerial dance harness, vertical dance, and cloud swing, as well as complimentary ground based apparatus and techniques including: cyr wheel, acrobatics, contortion, stretching, contact improvisation, dance, gyrotonics, and vayu aerial yoga. EADF Tutors represent the best in the sector, drawing from world class talent each year. We often see popular tutors returning year on year, as well as inviting fabulous international newcomers to share their wealth of knowledge and skill. As a disability-led company, Gravity & Levity pride itself on creating EADF as an inclusive event. More than ever before, from 2022, EADF offers bespoke access accommodations, BSL interpretation and we welcome support workers to all sessions. Our tutors are all briefed in using inclusive language and are offered more bespoke access feedback on their delivery, so that we can support each other as a sector to develop and grow. We are also able to offer subsidised places for people that identify as underrepresented in the sector.

It wouldn't be EADF without welcoming back the wonderful Laura Pero!

So we're delighted to have Laura return to teach Kinstretch® in week two (12th - 16th Aug), as follows:

The Kinstretch® Method (All levels):

🕘 9-10am: Warmup
Full body CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) - mobilising and activating each joint in isolation as a way to ignite and strengthen our functional movement.

🕙 10.15-11.45am: Full technique class
Through the week we’ll progress through different areas of the body applying the Kinstretch® method to gain access to that tissue.

🕜 1.35-2.25pm: Lunchtime Warmup
This class can be taken as a warm up/joint preparation (if you’re just joining us for the afternoon) or as a warm down/maintenance/recovery if that’s the end of your EADF day and you’re off to spend the afternoon on the beach!

A BIT ABOUT LAURA:

Originally from London, Laura has roots in dance and aerial circus. She specialises in human movement enhancement through joint mobility & strength training with Kinstretch® (a training concept by Functional Range Systems®). She is currently the only active, licensed Kinstretch® instructor in France.

This system of thinking provides Laura with the concepts and tools by which she can apply her insight into human movement and her passion for helping people build better and healthier access to their movement.

MORE ABOUT KINSTRETCH®:

Laura has a fascinating video on her Instagram where she demonstrates Kinstretch® in relation to the performing arts. Head over to instagram.com/l.a.u.r.a.p.e.r.o and her post from 4 April (instagram.com/p/DIA71WYoMV2).

We promise you'll want to try Kinstretch® and experience the powerful effect it can have on your body. Who's done it before? 🙂

* EADF Bursaries - Awards Update *

Behind the scenes there’s a team shaping, suggesting and sharing the possibilities in Gravity & Levity’s programme.

A panel formed of G&L’s steering group were delighted to award 13 bursaries to attend the EADF for those identifying as D/deaf and disabled or under-represented in the aerial sector - yay 🙌

We fully recognise the disproportionate impact having intersectional identities brings, and in particular if being disabled is one of them, especially in the current proposed UK government clampdown on PIP and access to work.

We’ve awarded a total of 21 bursaries across our Dissecting Aerial symposium and the EADF. 🤸‍♀️

Huge thanks to Arts Council England for making this and everything we do possible 🙏

Successful bursary applicants have been notified and we look forward to welcoming you to in August!

Happy Friday post alert... 🤸‍♂️
We're delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application for Arts Council England funding 🎉☺️🎉
Which means that our creative professional development events - Dissecting Aerial Symposium (April) and European Aerial Dance Festival (August) - can go ahead this year!
This project award also enables us to offer more bursary places for D/deaf and disabled artists at all our events and peer-peer exchange opportunities.
Huge gratitude to our partners Worthing Theatres and Museum, Centre for the Creative Arts, East Dance and One Dance UK, and to Arts Council England for their support and to all the artists whose continued support has made this possible - thank you.
We say all this whilst fully recognising the disappointment of those whose bids weren’t successful this time around - we’ve been there ourselves and know just how much energy, heart and hard work goes into writing them. 🙏
We can't wait to welcome you - more details to follow on plans for the year!
