One week to go until our Showdown Showcase, and we'd love to see you there.

If you haven't come across Showdown before, it's a one-on-one table sport played in blindfolds, which means everyone starts on a completely equal footing. It's fast, it's fun, and our Sussex Spitfires Showdown Club team — including Sam and Ellie, who have won multiple medals and represented Team GB — will be on hand to show you how it's done.

We want everyone to feel welcome at our Christmas Carol Service on Saturday 5th December, so here's a few practicalities and accessibility details.

St Botolph's Church on Lansdowne Road in Worthing has step-free access through one of the Lansdowne Road entrances, an accessible toilet in the St Botolph Room, and assistance dogs are very welcome (as always!).

Street parking is available nearby, and the service itself begins at 4pm, with arrivals and refreshments from 3pm, so there's no need to rush.

Tickets are £10 per person, with children under 12 free, and include mulled w**e or a soft drink and mince pies.

It is essential that our beautiful green and blue spaces here in are accessible to all 🌊💚

I recently brought together representatives from a range of our fantastic local organisations, charities and interest groups to explore ways to make that
access more inclusive.

We came away with lots of positive ideas and I’ll be working with PhD researcher Sadie Rockcliffe to drive the action needed to give everyone the opportunity to fully enjoy our beautiful beaches, South Downs and parks 🤝

Today marks White Cane Awareness Day.

Many visually impaired people use a white cane as a mobility aid, either to get tactile feedback of the environment around them, or as a symbol to other people that they are visually impaired. Here's a quick overview of three of the different types of cane available:

Long White Cane
These are the canes that most people are used to seeing in media. It is as tall as the collar bone of the user, and swept side to side on the floor, hitting obstacles so that the user is made aware of them.

Symbol Cane
These are much smaller and shorter than long canes, and are held out in front of the user, rather than touching the ground. They are used so that others can see that the user has low vision.

Guide Cane
These are similar to long canes, but without the rubber handle. They are used to judge the distance and depth of the environment such as curbs, rather than the whole environment.

If you would like to get a white cane, or want more information about them, speak to the Vision Rehabilitation Specialists (VRS). They are contactable at Care Point at 01243 642121. Alternatively a VRS attends our coffee morning oncee a month; give us a call to find out the date of their next visit.

Sight Support Worthing is hosting a Christmas Wreath Making Evening on Monday 7th December, 6.30pm–9.30pm at our Centre on Rowlands Road in Worthing. Jude and Fiona - experienced art teachers and wreath making experts - will guide you through creating your own beautiful wreath to take home, with all materials supplied.

Here at Sight Support Worthing we have a free counselling service for our visually impaired clients. And now, we have capacity for more members to have sessions.

Counselling can support you with many issues and areas of your life that cause difficulties including low mood, depression, anxiety, low confidence, and self-esteem. You may have had a difficult life experience such as bereavement or been impacted by disability including sight loss.

After an initial assessment, you can be offered up to 20 weekly sessions, which last 50 minutes each.
