Our mission is to change lives through bicycle re-use

At Re-Cycle we collect unwanted bicycles from across the UK, saving them from landfill, and ship them to Africa. In Britain, thousands of bikes are thrown away or lie unused in sheds, whilst many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. People spend hours each day walking to collect water, firewood or to access health care, sc

hool and employment. A bicycle lightens this burden and dramatically improves their wellbeing as well as work and education opportunities helping to bring social change. A bicycle cuts travel time to a fraction and can carry passengers and heavy loads. The ever growing list below shows the countries that the bikes have been sent to since we started shipping to Africa in 1998. We have now sent more than 94,000 bikes - all thanks to the donations of bikes, time and money from our many wonderful supporters. Very many thanks to all who have supported our work :)

A huge thank you to Chilterns Lifestyle Centre, who held a week-long bike collection for Re-Cycle earlier this month.

Thanks to the support from the local community, they collected 66 donated bikes.

Bikes that will avoid landfill and help change lives across rural Africa through access to reliable transport.

Starting from 8:00am at the Re-Cycle warehouse, riders will be taking on the Essex & Suffolk countryside on our 42 or 64 mile routes.

The sun will be shining, the tea and coffee will be flowing, and every mile ridden helps support Re-Cycle’s work getting bikes to communities in Africa.

Last month we were proud to continue supporting cycling opportunities for children in Sierra Leone through the Lunsar Cycling Festival (one of the country’s biggest and most exciting cycling events!) 💚

In this year’s kids’ race, around 80% of the bikes used were provided by Re-Cycle, along with the medals for finishers.

Festival organiser, Karim, shared:
"I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to you and the entire Re-Cycle team for your continued support of our work. Because of your generous contribution, we are able to put smiles on many faces and create meaningful change in Sierra Leone."

Reducing teenage pregnancy and drug and alcohol abuse

In rural Zambia, peer educators are making a real difference in schools supported by Care Providers Foundation. They deliver regular sessions for students covering adolescence and sexuality, human rights, substance abuse, sexual offences, HIV and AIDS, and more.

To make this work possible, Re-Cycle bikes are behind the scenes... with schools spread across remote areas bicycles are essential for travel. Peer educators often cover around 10 kilometres a day, bikes ensure educators can reach students consistently and keep the programme running🌍

To date, more than 1,600 bikes have been donated through the six stores.
