Today we're shining a spotlight on Kerry, one of our most versatile volunteers.
Whether she's helping prep bikes in the warehouse, supporting bike collections and events, or assisting from the office with partnership development and research, Kerry is always willing to get stuck in wherever help is needed.
Kerry's story:
On New Years Day 2024 I was widowed after having been a full-time carer for my late husband, Charles, for three and a half years. I found myself alone in a big house, having become isolated due to my caring role and the pandemic. I hadn't been in paid employment since Summer 2020.
Fortunately, I met a lovely Scotsman named John who introduced me to Re-Cycle!
Volunteering gives me a purpose to get up, builds up my self-confidence, gives me the opportunity to meet new people, enables me to develop new skills and helps me contribute positively to the world.
The Re-Cycle staff and volunteers are a wonderful community; it's like an extended men's shed with five lovely ladies in the office and occasionally one or two other women in the warehouse. I love travelling to the warehouse through the rolling farmland and the opportunity to do so many different things when I arrive.
After previously having had no idea about bikes, I now prep bikes for shipping to Africa, help organise and run pop-up bike collections, and promote the charity at events. Currently I am also volunteering in the office making a mahoosive spreadsheet of all bike shops and bike hire businesses in the UK, county by county (!)
Hopefully this will help with creating alternative supply chains and help with logistics.
