Our mission is to change lives through bicycle re-use

At Re-Cycle we collect unwanted bicycles from across the UK, saving them from landfill, and ship them to Africa. In Britain, thousands of bikes are thrown away or lie unused in sheds, whilst many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. People spend hours each day walking to collect water, firewood or to access health care, school and employment. A bicycle lightens this burden and dramatically improves their wellbeing as well as work and education opportunities helping to bring social change. A bicycle cuts travel time to a fraction and can carry passengers and heavy loads. The ever growing list below shows the countries that the bikes have been sent to since we started shipping to Africa in 1998. We have now sent more than 94,000 bikes - all thanks to the donations of bikes, time and money from our many wonderful supporters. Very many thanks to all who have supported our work :)

360 bikes distributed in Sierra Leone!

Our partners Village Bike Project recently distributed bikes across Bo and Tonkolili districts, helping 300 students who walk up to eight miles to school, as well as 60 teachers, farmers and community health workers.

They’ve also set up a new 20-bike library at Bo Amadiyah Secondary School, giving students a way to borrow a bike for their journey to school.

273 of the bikes were provided through the Schools for Salone programme 💚

Sonah, 12, used to walk for two hours every day just to get to school.

Since receiving a bike through our partner Village Bike Project , that journey takes half the time. But the difference goes far beyond school:

💚 With no electricity in her village, Sonah cycles to another village to charge her parents’ phones
💚 Her four siblings use the bike for weekend errands
💚 When she finishes school in three years, she plans to hand it down to her younger sibling

This bike was first donated to Re-Cycle by Center Parcs UK, then made its way to Ghana. One donated bike, a whole family helped.

Since 2017, donated UK bikes have helped students across rural Gambia get to school on time.

662 students. 19 schools. 18 villages. Up to 75% shorter journeys.

Eggeh is in Grade 11 and lives in a rural village in The Gambia. Her school is 8km away.

For a young girl, that journey isn't just long. On unlit tracks and on muddy paths in the rainy season, it can be unsafe too.

Then Eggeh received a Re-Cycle bike, along with a helmet and a high-vis waistcoat.

Our partner WYCE Gambia ngo reports that it has made her journey faster, safer and less exhausting, and that it's helping her attend and take part in school.

Her story shows why this project matters so much for girls. Over half of the students on Cycle to School are girls, and for many of them, a bike removes one of the practical barriers between them and their education.

Another container has arrived — this time all the way in Zambia!

Our latest shipment of Re-Cycle bikes, spare parts and tools has safely arrived with our partners, Care Providers Foundation.

The bikes will provide affordable transport to communities across rural Zambia, while bikes sold locally help fund CPF’s community projects, from clean water and education to support for girls in schools.

This Bike Is Helping a Family Build a Better Future

Linley and Mary live in Nkhumba, Malawi, where they both sell tomatoes at the local market.

They travel to farmers to buy tomatoes before taking them to market three times a week. Having a bike makes these journeys quicker and easier, helping them get their produce to market and run their businesses.

They bought their bikes through Africycle’s bike loan scheme, paying over four months rather than upfront, making it possible for them to afford a bike.

Their bikes are also used to buy food for their families, while their children use them to get to school.

A simple bike is helping them earn, travel and support their families. 💚
