AC Reader, OC Riahi, and OC Griffin joined the Sea Cadets flagship, TS Royalist, in Weymouth today for a week-long offshore voyage.

Over the coming week, they will sail to Gosport as part of the ship’s programme, experiencing life onboard a square-rigged vessel and taking part in all aspects of operating the ship. From helming and keeping lookout, to sail handling, navigation, watchkeeping, and living as part of the ship’s company, the voyage promises to be a challenging and rewarding adventure.

Voyages onboard TS Royalist provide cadets with a unique opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and independence whilst experiencing life at sea in a way few young people ever will.

We wish all three cadets an enjoyable and successful voyage and look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return.

It’s been a busy and successful week of boating activity for the Ship’s Company ⚓

Wednesday evening saw our competition teams back on the water for a dedicated training session, with cadets taking part in rowing races ahead of the upcoming District Combined Regatta, alongside intensive sailing practice as preparations continue for the Area Sailing Competition. It was fantastic to see cadets developing their teamwork, confidence, and competitive skills whilst enjoying some excellent conditions on the water.

This weekend, we then hosted our Unit Boating Weekend, giving cadets the opportunity to take part in a range of boating activities including rowing, paddlesport, and dinghy sailing courses. Across the weekend, cadets worked towards qualifications, developed practical seamanship skills, and gained valuable experience afloat under the guidance of our volunteer instructors and staff team.

Saturday evening was rounded off perfectly with a swim test refresher to cool off after a warm day on the water, followed by a BBQ and social evening at the boat station — a great opportunity for cadets and volunteers to relax and enjoy the weekend together.

A huge thank you goes to all staff, volunteers, and supporters who helped make the week and weekend possible, and well done to all cadets involved for their enthusiasm, effort, and teamwork throughout.

Yesterday evening we were proud to welcome onboard Area Officer (Eastern), Commander C Bagot-Jewitt RN, accompanied by District Officer (North West), Lt Cdr (SCC) F Avill RNR, for our biennial Royal Naval Parade.

During the visit, Cdr Bagot-Jewitt carried out a formal inspection of Ship’s Company, providing the opportunity to speak with cadets and volunteers about their experiences, achievements, and development within the Corps.

The evening commenced with Ceremonial Divisions and the formal inspection, before our Senior Cadets delivered a presentation reflecting on the Unit’s achievements, activities, and successes over the last 12 months. Cadets then led a series of interactive training evolutions, actively engaging the Area Officer, parents, and invited guests by giving them the opportunity to get involved and experience some of the activities firsthand. These included an introduction to drumming, decorative ropework, camoflague and concealment demonstrations, and STEM pom-pom catapults.

Guests were also treated to a display by our newly formed Corps of Drums. Our sincere thanks go to Toby for his continued time, commitment, and support in training and developing the band.

The evening concluded with Evening Colours, awards and presentations, and an address from the Area Officer. Congratulations to all cadets who received awards and qualifications during the evening, including Intermediate First Aid and RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 4 certifications. Particular congratulations also go to PPO Moore who, having successfully completed his probationary period and all required Adult Core Modules, was promoted to substantive Petty Officer.

We were delighted to welcome a number of civic and community guests onboard, including Cllr Sybil Fielding, Chairman of Bassetlaw District Council, Mr Ray Fielding, Chairman of Nottinghamshire Royal British Legion, and Mr John Pragnell, Commodore of Welbeck Sailing Club.

A huge thank you also goes to all parents, carers, families, and supporters who attended during the evening. Your continued encouragement and support of the Unit and our cadets is greatly appreciated.

Finally, well done to all cadets and volunteers involved for their professionalism, turnout, and hard work in delivering such a successful evening and showcasing what a strong, capable, and professional Ship’s Company we continue to be.

Yesterday evening, our Commanding Officer and Unit Chairman were invited to attend Bassetlaw District Council’s Annual General Meeting, which saw Cllr Sybil Fielding elected as Chairman of the Council for 2026/27.

Cllr Fielding has been a long-standing supporter and has championed the unit for many years, particularly through her role as Armed Forces Champion and her work with the Royal British Legion, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her over the coming year.

We would also like to place on record our sincere thanks to the outgoing Chairman, Cllr Tony Eaton, for his unwavering support during his year in office, including choosing the unit as his Charity of the Year. His encouragement and commitment to the work of the unit has been greatly appreciated by all involved.

We look forward to continuing our close relationship with Bassetlaw District Council and supporting our local community over the coming year.

Another busy week across the unit with plenty happening on and off the water! ⚓️

On Wednesday, our regatta teams were back on the water for another productive training session as preparations continue for the rowing season ahead. It was also great to see our Viking powerboat refloated following a maintenance period, now back afloat with a fresh coat of paint. 🚣🏻‍♀️

Friday evening saw further training for our Corps of Drums. Considering the band has only been together for a few months, they are sounding great and continuing to build confidence, skill, and repertoire each week. 🥁

Over the weekend, OC Zicman, Cdt Hopkinson and MC Frost attended the Northwest District Boating Weekend at Midlands Boat Station in Birmingham, successfully achieving their RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 1 qualification. A big thank you as well to PO Smith for supporting the weekend as driver and chef. ⛵️

Meanwhile, our Chairman, CI Hague, travelled to Whale Island Boat Station at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, where he successfully completed the RYA Intermediate Powerboat course. The course focused on advanced boat handling, passage planning, pilotage, and navigating tidal waters on the Solent. 🚤

A fantastic week all round and great to see so many areas of the unit continuing to develop.

A great evening on the water on Wednesday as we kicked off team selection and training for this year’s rowing regattas.

With crews getting back into the rhythm, it was a great opportunity to build teamwork, technique, and race readiness.

Alongside this, AC Maltby and OC Benton continued their sailing development as they prepare for the Area Sailing Regatta in June.

A positive evening all round with plenty more to come!

A busy and productive weekend across the unit! ⚓️

On Thursday evening we hosted our shipmates from Scarborough Sea Cadets, who were representing Eastern Area in the Continuity Competition at the National Drill and Piping Competition. The following day, the group travelled to HMS Raleigh, where our CO was part of the judging team for Saturday’s competition. It was also a great to see our affiliate ship HMS Portland alongside in HMNB Devonport.

A mention as well to our own Colour Party team, unable to attend on this occasion, but current Eastern Area champions and a team we know would have delivered a strong performance and represented the unit with distinction.

Congratulations to PO Brooks, PPO Plowright and CI Fox on successfully completing the RYA Safety Boat course at the boat station this weekend, delivered in-house under the instruction of our Chairman, CI Hague. Great to see our team continuing to build the qualifications needed to support a busy season afloat.

The weekend was rounded off with further training afloat, focusing on capsize recovery drills and rowing development, continuing to build skills, confidence, and teamwork on the water.

A great effort all round and a strong start to the season!

Making the most of the weather on Wednesday evening, members of the Ship’s Company took to the water to brush off the cobwebs and focus on personal development.

With cadets out rowing and sailing, it was a great opportunity to build skills, confidence, and teamwork on the water.

A fantastic start to the season!
