The polytunnels cost £3,000 each to buy new covers and it took almost 3 years to raise the funding to have them recovered.
Funds came from Asda, Tesco, the Duke of Portlands trust and private donations, for which the community garden was very grateful. Although it is the end of the season, their tomatoes are still going strong so the polytunnels are definitely being put to good use.

They were proud to show me their polytunnels which they have raised funds to recover. Initially given to the community garden by the council, they declined to maintain them and therefore the gardeners had to raise the funds themselves.

The community garden is run by volunteer John, whilst Kevin helps out. It is a gardening group that has been formed to help give people access to green spaces in a social and supportive space. Lots of laughs are had and everyone is welcome, both individuals and families.

They were busy fixing their storage shed as although they desperately need a new one, they do not have the funds to buy one so they are making do and mending in the best tradition of a can do attitude.

I was warmly welcomed to our community garden today. I met a group of enthusiastic and committed gardeners who pull together as a team and clearly enjoy being in each other's company on the plot.

Anna definitely has a touch of magic when growing, and has had bumper harvests, even in the unusual Summer we have had this year. She credited the importance of looking after her soil as a key component to success. She has sieved all the stones from her soil and has also put manure into the ground to feed her plants.
Everything seems to thrive in her plot and as I garden a plot next door to her, she is both a role model and inspiration to me. I just hope a bit of her magic drifts onto my plot, too.

I spoke to Anna about how her early gardening experience in a small village in South Central Poland has influenced her success in growing lots of veggies and flowers on her plot. Anna gardened with her family in an area where producing your own food was very much the norm.

Sandy enters his blooms in shows in Norfolk and Suffolk, and also enters the intermediate section of the nationals at Wisley.
He also shows them at the Worksop show, which is taking place soon.
If you have time on the 5th or 6th of September, perhaps you could pop along to St Anne's church and support one of our allotmenteers.
