We are in the final stages of planning for the WI duck race which is on Sunday 21st June and I would like to say thank you to those of you who answered our call-out for extra helpers this year but we would could still do with some more . .Please contact Dawn Short on 07817 681778 if you can spare an hour or 2 on the day to help set up or dismantle at the end of the event.
We have listened to what villagers have said about the race taking too long and have chosen a point on the river further downstream to put the ducks in , which we hope will shorten the race by at least 20 minutes - it all depends on river levels on the day. Historically the ducks have gone into the river over the bridge at Cinderhill, but 40 years on there are fallen trees and obstacles in the river and it does not flow as freely as it once did. There will be a marker at the spot where the ducks go in and you will be able to follow the ducks progress from the various duck viewing stages along the river towards the finish line. The event starts at 2pm with stalls on the green and craft stalls and refreshments in the village hall. The ducks will go in a 3pm. A limited number of duck tickets will be on sale at The Retreat on the Row, Shireoaks Fish & Chip Shop and Shireoaks Post Office from the beginning of June with the remainder of tickets for sale on the village green on the day. Overflow parking is available at the Hewett Arms, please use this facility to avoid the main road becoming too congested.
New for this year. We are also having a red duck race which starts at 2.30pm, in the chapel gardens. This has been organised by Aurora Wellbeing Centres, a local cancer charity. If you would like to sponsor a duck as a business, individual or in memory of a loved one they are £20 each. The winning duck will receive a bespoke 'Wellbeing Bundle' from Aurora.
