✨ Hall Garden is officially open ✨

Today we were proud to officially open Hall Garden with a special community celebration in the heart of Workington 💚

Developed by West House within the historic grounds of Workington Hall, Hall Garden brings together a welcoming café, community growing spaces and creative opportunities, creating meaningful experiences for people with learning disabilities across Cumbria.

We were delighted to welcome local MP Josh MacAlister and Leader of Cumberland Council, Mark Fryer, alongside partners, supporters and members of the community who have helped bring this vision to life.

Guests enjoyed a first look at the café, gardens and pottery spaces, meeting the incredible teams behind the project and seeing the impact Hall Garden will have for years to come

Hall Garden is now open to the public every:

✨ Apprentice Spotlight – Meet Sophie ✨

Sophie has been part of our Community Activities team for 16 months, working as an Apprentice Support Worker, and what a journey it’s been!

She chose an apprenticeship because she genuinely enjoys what she does. Over the past year, she’s built strong bonds with colleagues and the people she supports, developed new skills, and has grown in confidence, all while earning and learning at the same time.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Sophie has gained valuable skills in dignity in care, teamwork, communication, safeguarding and responsibility. But alongside the practical skills, she’s also developed something just as important - empathy.

What does she enjoy most?
Learning something new every day. Taking time to speak to the people she supports and getting to know them properly. Helping them grow in independence and build new skills. And being someone they trust.

Sophie’s message to anyone thinking about an apprenticeship?
It’s a head start, builds confidence, independence and real experience for the future.

If you’re ready to learn, grow and make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and to celebrate, we caught up with some of our super star apprentices!

Jessica has been part of our Community Activities team since September. In just five months as an Apprentice Support Worker, she’s already making a real difference.

Inspired by her cousin’s experience of disability, Jessica chose to start her apprenticeship with West House because she wanted to help people have the chance to live full, “normal” lives, and to learn the skills to support others in the right way.

One of the biggest lessons she’s learned so far? Patience.
Alongside clear communication, it’s a skill she says is key in her role, and one she continues to build every day.

What does she enjoy most?
“Meeting new people, building connections and learning more about them every day. You build such strong relationships that it makes you feel at home when you work.”

That sense of belonging, growth and purpose is exactly what apprenticeships at West House are all about.

If you’re thinking about starting an apprenticeship, Jessica’s advice is simple:
Stay positive, keep trying and don’t give up when things feel challenging!
