Our neighbours at Red House Glass Cone have a steeplejack on site this Friday, and it’s going to be a brilliant bit of heritage craft in action.

Fred Dibnah famously necked a few pints before climbing this in 1989. Different times, different rules. Today’s steeplejacks work with full safety systems, training and precision, but the spectacle is still every bit as impressive.

If you’re in the Glass Quarter on Friday, swing by Red House Glass Cone and watch the climb. It’s a rare chance to see traditional skills, engineering know‑how and Black Country history in the making, all in one moment.

Afghan glassmaking, frozen in time.

A mud‑brick furnace, glowing embers, and a 200‑year family tradition still carried out exactly as it was in the seventh century. This remarkable footage from Herat, Afghanistan (1977) captures cousins Saifullah and Saidullah hand‑blowing glass using white quartz and plant ash- a method unchanged for generations. Filmed by a Corning Museum of Glass research team, it offers a rare glimpse into living heritage and the resilience of craft through conflict and change.

Wartime Glassmakers- Women entered the glass factories in the 1940s, mastering fire and craft with extraordinary skill. Men continued working throughout the war too, keeping production alive together. A tribute to the hands that shaped Stourbridge’s history. And the music you hear was broadcast into factories during WWII- part of the morale‑boosting soundtrack that kept Britain’s industrial workforce moving. Songs like this were played daily on the BBC’s Music While You Work, echoing through glasshouses, munitions plants and workshops across the country.

Part of a 11‑minute Dutch short film by Bert Haanstra, Glas contrasts traditional hand‑blown glassmaking with mechanised industrial production. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short in 1959 and is widely considered one of the finest process films ever made.

📚 The book tells the story of the British Glass Foundation, from its beginnings through to the creation of Stourbridge Glass Museum on the iconic site of the former Stuart glassworks in Wordsley.

Originally published in 2023 and reprinted by demand in 2024 and again in 2026, this latest edition has been comprehensively updated to bring the story right up to date, including the museum's more recent developments.

And importantly, all proceeds go towards supporting Stourbridge Glass Museum and its work preserving the area's remarkable glassmaking heritage.
