Our Story

YSS has been supporting young carers in Worcestershire since 2003. We currently work with over 450 young carers from across the county and offer a wide range of support services. We deliver four clubs at two venues in the county every month where young carers can switch off from their caring roles and have fun, whilst engaging in activities they may not normally be able to access. We also run many trips and activities throughout the year, such as camping trips, visits to the seaside, fishing, bowling, ice skating and everything in between. For any young carers experiencing particular difficulties, we are able to offer one to one support from a skilled keyworker. These sessions are outcome focused and aim to give the young carer the tools to balance their caring roles with their school or college work and other responsibilities.

Our Participation Project is funded by BBC Children in Need and is in its fifth year. It aims to give young carers a voice and the chance to meet with, and influence, the services that affect them. This is very successful project that has already produced three conferences that were very well received. The group meets once a month at YSS head office.

In addition to these services, as from October 2017 we are delivering an Education Link project. This project employs a specialist worker to establish and strengthen relationships with the county’s schools, with an aim to raise awareness around young carers’ issues and help identify new young carers not currently receiving a service from us. This is done through delivering assemblies to pupils, presentations to staff teams and identifying a young carers “champion” in each school.
