UNISON Worcestershire Branch members are questioning whether the Charity Commission is the appropriate regulator for an organisation whose income is overwhelmingly funded by public money.Less than 2% of MHT's income comes from genuine charitable donations, while over 90% comes from taxpayers. If MHT wants to be treated as a charity, rather than a trust accountable to the people who are required to fund it through local taxes, then it should stop benefiting from public funds and raise money like other charities. And yes, trustees are democratically elected representatives of their areas. That's exactly what democratic representation looks like. How else should it work?

Trustees have been told to consider their position if they don't comply

Our Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) are open as normal, with one exception: Hallow Road, Worcester, which will be closed on Bank Holdiay Monday.

For full opening times, visit the Household Recycling Centres page. https://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/lets-waste-less/recycling/household-recycling-centres

A quick reminder: we’ve had to temporarily stop accepting fridges and freezers at all Worcestershire HRCs due to a national shortage of specialist recycling capacity. This pause is happening across the UK and isn’t a local decision.

We recognise that this temporary suspension will be frustrating and inconvenient for residents, but we will resume acceptance as soon as national capacity improves. In the meantime, residents replacing an appliance may want to consider retailer take‑back schemes, repair options, or reuse platforms such as Freecycle or Facebook Marketplace.

If using a waste carrier, please check they are licensed and confirm where your appliance will be taken. Unlicensed collectors often lead to fly‑tipping and enforcement action.
