Meet Veronicah, one of thousands of volunteers helping to ensure that people facing serious illness in Kenya are not alone.

In Kisii County, Veronicah supports patients and families living with serious illness, including the gentleman in this photo who has prostate cancer, and his young carer. Through home visits, she provides practical help, comfort and encouragement, while connecting people to the care and support they need.

For Veronicah, volunteering is about making a real difference in the lives of others. She says:
"I can relieve pain, comfort families, and connect patients to the care they thought was out of reach. Every visit I make reminds me that compassion truly changes lives."

This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating people like Veronicah, who freely give their time to support some of the most vulnerable members of their communities. Since our training programme started in 2014, we have trained more than 5,000 volunteers and community members in palliative care, across Kenya. Together, they are bringing kindness, hope and dignity to patients and families facing some of life's toughest challenges.

Thank you, Veronicah, and every volunteer making a difference every day.

Why do we train Community Health Volunteers in Kenya?

Community Health Volunteers are often trusted members of their communities and can make a real difference to people living with serious illness.

Through palliative care training, volunteers learn how to recognise symptoms, provide basic support and connect patients and families with local health services. Just as importantly, they offer a listening ear, a friendly face and a helping hand during difficult times.

This is especially valuable in rural areas, where access to healthcare can be limited. By equipping volunteers with knowledge and skills, we are helping more people access compassionate care, support and dignity close to home.

Over the past 18 months, our Men’s Palliative Care Project in partnership with Machakos Palliative Care Unit has helped double the number of men accessing palliative care services.
By the end of the project, around 80 men per month were receiving support, compared to around half that number before the project began.

The impact goes far beyond numbers. Men and their families reported less worry, better emotional wellbeing, improved symptom management and feeling more supported during serious illness. Health workers also saw men becoming more open about discussing pain, stress and emotional concerns.

One patient told us: “My pain has reduced, my fear has lessened and I begin to feel more at peace.”

Through community awareness, training for 177 health workers and work with local community and faith leaders, the project has helped challenge stigma and encourage men to seek support earlier.
We are proud to see more men and families accessing the care, comfort and dignity they deserve.

“I view palliative care as not just a profession, but as my identity and lifelong passion. It is not just what I do, but truly who I am”
~Palliative care nurse, Stella Rithara

Today, on International Nurses Day, we want to celebrate all the incredible nurses we work alongside in Kenya. Every day, they bring compassion, dignity and comfort to people facing serious illness, often in challenging circumstances and underserved communities. Their care goes far beyond medicine, offering emotional support, advocacy and human connection when it is needed most.

Stella Rithara is just one of those amazing nurses; a passionate palliative care nurse, educator and community advocate who has dedicated her life to ensuring people in Kajiado County can live and die with dignity.
After caring for her aunt through breast cancer, Stella discovered palliative care through Nairobi Hospice in 2005. What began as personal experience became a lifelong calling. During home visits, she recognised that many patients in Kajiado West were missing out on vital care because they lived beyond the hospice catchment area. Refusing to let people suffer alone, she began volunteering on weekends, and her palliative care organisation, ONPACC was born.
Since then, Stella has helped build a compassionate community care model that reaches underserved families with pain relief, emotional support and dignity at the end of life. Alongside this, she has trained future palliative care nurses through Kenya Medical Training College.
Despite challenges including limited resources, low awareness and lack of access to essential medicines, Stella continues to serve her community with compassion and determination.
We are proud to work in partnership with Stella and ONPACC to bring palliative care closer to the people who need it most in Kajiado County.

Women supporting women 💗

Breast cancer survivors coming together to create knitted prostheses for others who have undergone mastectomy, offering not only comfort, but understanding through shared experience.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Kenya, with thousands of new cases diagnosed each year, making support initiatives like this more important than ever.

At Hospice Care Kenya, we are proud to support work that restores confidence, dignity, and a sense of community.

On Sibling Day, we’re recognising the brothers and sisters who are so often overlooked.
Behind every child we support, there’s often a sibling who is equally deserving of our support whilst they carry the emotional weight of watching someone they love face serious illness.
Through our Every Child Counts programme, we make sure siblings are not forgotten. We create safe spaces where they can express their feelings, take part in activities and simply be children again. Whether it’s through play, peer support or dedicated time with our nurses and volunteers, we help them feel seen, heard and valued.
Having a seriously ill child in the family can change everything. Siblings may feel anxious, confused or even isolated as attention naturally shifts towards their brother or sister. Without support, these feelings can have a lasting impact.
That’s why it’s so important to focus on siblings too. When we support them, we strengthen the whole family.

On , we recognise that palliative care is essential for everyone living with a serious illness, not just at the end of life. It helps manage symptoms, provides emotional support and improves quality of life from the point of diagnosis, yet millions still lack access.
We are a UK-based charity supporting palliative care in Kenya. Our mission is to ease suffering and improve the experience of life, death and grief for children, adults, and their families in Kenya living with incurable illnesses.
Last year, we worked with local Kenyan hospices to provide care and support to over 5,500 people living with life-limiting illnesses. Palliative care is a vital part of universal health coverage, and everyone who needs it should be able to receive it.

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness month in the UK

A prostate cancer diagnosis can be tough — not just for men, but for their partners too. In Kenya, many couples face stigma, isolation and a heavy emotional and practical burden while navigating treatment and care.

As a UK charity working in Kenya, we’re working with St Gallen Oncology Network to care for 120 couples who are living with the challenges of prostate cancer, and training over 200 carers and community members in basic home-based care. With support and counselling, couples feel less alone, more confident, and better able to face the challenges of treatment together.

The 7th Kehpca - Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association Conference is taking place this week in Mombasa, bringing together professionals and partners working to strengthen and expand palliative care across Kenya.

This important gathering creates space to share learning, build collaboration and improve access to compassionate care. We’re proud that our Board member, Dr Sarah Onyango, presented this morning on Hospice Care Kenya’s role in supporting palliative care services in Kenya.
