We're now in the final optimal survey month (May - August) for bat emergence surveys.๐Ÿฆ‡

It's our busiest time of the year and everyone is working incredibly hard to support our clients, helping to keep projects moving and avoid planning delays.

This time, it was Rob's turn to head to Scotland, where he enjoyed some stunning scenery while carrying out the final bat emergence survey for one of our clients. ๐Ÿฆ‡

We caught up with Sam, who we welcomed back for his second season with Focus as a Seasonal Ecologist Assistant! ๐Ÿฆ‡

Sam has been getting stuck into a variety of field surveys and desk-based work, continuing to build his knowledge and experience across different areas of ecology while providing great support to the team.

One of Sam's highlights this year has been carrying out peregrine surveys and seeing four peregrine chicks, as well as completing GCN training and putting his new skills into practice.

When he's not out on site, he's been busy mapping breeding bird territories, reviewing NVA footage and carrying out bat call analysis.

It's great to have you back Sam! ๐Ÿ˜€

We've had lots of enquiries about badgers recently! ๐Ÿฆก

On one of our recent projects, we carried out a badger sett closure. This process is only undertaken when impacts cannot be avoided and follows detailed ecological surveys and the appropriate licences.

One-way gates are installed to allow badgers to leave the sett naturally while preventing them from returning. Once monitoring confirms the sett is no longer in use, it can be safely closed, ensuring development can proceed while protecting this legally protected species. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ธ Before and after the sett closure.

Monkwood is a Butterfly Conservation reserve. ๐Ÿฆ‹ There were lots of beautiful butterflies on the wing when we were there and we couldn't resist a few snaps.

Here we have brimstone moth, peacock butterfly, painted lady butterfly and wood white butterfly.๐Ÿฆ‹

Did you know that the delicate little wood white is one of the UK's rarest and most threatened butterflies and is listed as 'Endangered' on the UK Red List.๐Ÿ’š We were lucky enough to see several mating pairs and even some eggs on greater bird's-foot trefoil!

Keeping your botany skills sharp is essential for an ecologist! Here are some recent photos taken at the beautiful Sturts Meadows in Herefordshire with beautiful meadow flowers like great burnet and pepper saxifrage. ๐ŸŒฟ

Graham, Rob and Abby really enjoyed the opportunity to hang out with national botanical expert and author, Hilary Wallace, who showed us around the meadows as part of Bonkers on Botany - Herefordshire.

We also found a rare and threatened sedge; the True Fox Sedge (๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜น ๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข), which is listed as Vulnerable on the Vascular Plant Red Data List. It has a distinctive ligule (flap) on its leaves and a dense flowering head. ๐Ÿ˜€

A great day out last week for surveyors Alana and Sam, director Graham Davison, and work experience student Arthur. They carried out a GIS-based habitat mapping exercise to grade woodland in its suitability for hazel dormice. ๐Ÿ˜€ Arthur is a Year 10 student from a local high school.

We hosted Arthur as a joint work experience offering with our good friends at Speller Metcalfe Malvern Ltd - we hope he enjoyed his time with us.

Alana also found some very impressive marsh ragwort - a Monkwood speciality! ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸIt's Bees' Needs Week! ๐Ÿ

Did you know that bees and other pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystems and the food we eat? The good news is that even small changes can make a big difference:

- Plant nectar-rich flowers
- Let areas of your garden grow a little wilder
- Cut your grass less often
- Leave nesting and hibernation spots undisturbed
- Think carefully before using pesticides.

With the school holidays just around the corner, why not spend 10 minutes in your garden or local park taking part in a Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Count?๐ŸŒผ

Simply watch the flowers and count the insects you see, then submit your results to the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme. Every count helps improve our understanding of where pollinators live and how their populations are changing. ๐Ÿ˜€

Not your usual Preliminary Roost Assessment (PRA) or nesting bird check! Earlier this year, one of our surveys took us to the banks of the River Thames in London.๐Ÿ˜€

If you need a Preliminary Roost Assessment for a building or structure, get in touch today at [email protected].

PRAs can be carried out all year round. If bat emergence surveys are required (typically between May and August), we'll provide a quote straight after the initial survey so we can get you booked in for the next stage as soon as possible. That helps you avoid unnecessary delays to your planning application and means you won't have to wait until the next bat survey season. ๐Ÿฆ‡
