πŸ“£The eDNA survey window for Great Crested Newts is closing fast. Water samples can only be collected between 15th April - 30th June, so don't leave it too late and risk delays to your project.

eDNA testing is a highly effective way to determine whether ponds on your site support GCN.🦎

We still have some availability this season. Contact [email protected] if you'd like to discuss your survey.

Bat Supervision πŸ¦‡

Bat supervision ensures that buildings, trees and development sites are checked before any work begins and during sensitive works such as roof tile removal. Here is Gina doing bat supervision for a couple of projects this month where roof tiles were being removed.

Bat supervision has to be carried out by licensed ecologists and involves monitoring sensitive roost areas, keeping bats safe, moving any bats encountered to a bat box and ensuring compliance with wildlife law. By doing this, it helps protects bats and our ecosystem but also helps to avoid any project delays for our clients. πŸ¦‡

Did you know we carry out surveys across Scotland too?

Our Principal Ecologist Chloe, recently visited Argyll and Bute to undertake a bat activity survey and was treated to some beautiful scenery along the way. 😍

It’s not every day that ecology surveys come with views like these! πŸ˜€

Our director Graham recently set up some trail cameras in a nearby woodland in the hope of spotting pine martens. Although the pine martens didn’t make an appearance this time, the cameras still captured some fantastic footage of other local wildlife enjoying the woods. πŸ’š

Book in your Preliminary Roost Assessment (daytime bat survey) today.πŸ¦‡

These surveys can be carried out all year round, but if your planning proposal is likely to impact a structure or building, it’s important to get a PRA booked in sooner rather than later.

If Phase 2 bat activity surveys are required, these can only be undertaken between May and August - meaning we’re already in peak bat survey season!

Check out our offer for one structure based in one of the below counties or get in touch at [email protected] if you require a more bespoke quote. πŸ˜€

Our team can guide you through the process from start to finish, helping to keep everything moving smoothly and on schedule.

Our Principal Ecologist Chloe undertook a water vole and otter training course recently with The Species Recovery Trust. The course covered ecology, legislation and field signs of water voles and otters.

The course involved a presentation over teams and then a site visit to look for field signs of water voles and otters. Luckily it was a lovely sunny day and the team found feeding remains and droppings from water voles, and droppings (spraint) and a possible holt from otters.

Well done Chloe!πŸ˜€ and thank you to The Species Recovery Trust for providing a very informative course. Chloe would highly recommend to any Ecologists out there or anyone keen to learn more about these special protected species!

Using your Powers for Good!

At Focus, we give staff two days a year to do something good for the world! We call it Powers for Good – a chance to make a positive impact, however you choose. πŸ˜€

Our Associate Ecologist Jenny recently undertook dormouse monitoring in a Worcestershire woodland. A total of 98 dormouse nest boxes were checked under licence for the presence of dormice. Unfortunately, she didn't see any dormice on this visit but she did see lots of blue t**s with chicks and eggs, as well as wood mice and wood mouse nests.

Monitoring helps to inform management practices within woodlands to ensure that dormouse populations remain thriving. 🐭
