You may not be able to change the world, but we do know what a huge change you can bring to the lives of blind and partially sighted people. Can you offer some time to make a difference? We need volunteers who can visit our Sensory Matters Worcestershire clients in their homes or take them out for coffee and a chat. If you'd love to be the change, please call 01905 723245 or email [email protected]

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS!

Today we meet Paul! Here’s his volunteering story…

‘I have been volunteering with Sensory Matters Worcestershire for over two years. My father lost much of his sight following a road traffic collision so I witnessed the challenges he faced in his day to day life. Following my own retirement I wanted to support charities that I could empathise with their mission and this charity certainly ticks that box.

I continue to support a visually impaired person who moved to the region and wanted help getting to know the local area. Occasionally we go to events together as we share a love of theatre and music. We've had some great times at the RSC in Stratford!

Another highlight was acccompanying one of Sensory Matters Worcestershire’s visually impaired staff to London to attend a Paralympics celebratory event. We listened to several of the competitors and their stories of how they have risen to the challenges their impairment brings, and how through determination, resilience and skill they have become world-class athletes. Inspirational! On another occasion former 1500 metre world record holder Steve Cram came to Sensory Matters Worcestershire’s main office, The Bradbury Centre and gave a really interesting presentation on his work with visually impaired people.

Volunteering with Sensory Matters Worcestershire is a really worthwhile thing to do. Giving support to people who want it and having enjoyable times with them. Highly recommended!

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS!

Today we’re meeting Keith! He says:

‘Hi my name is Keith I am a volunteer with Sensory Matters Worcestershire

The reason why I volunteer with this charity is because when I was diagnosed with advance glaucoma I could no longer carry on working, but I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm to try and do something that kept me busy and at the same time support local charities.

My Consultant Ophthalmologist put me in touch with Sensory Matters Worcestershire, who are skilled in giving information, advice and guidance to people in my position and those who are living with blindness, sight loss, d/Deaf, hearing loss or dual sensory loss.
They encouraged me to get involved with volunteering and now I am part of the volunteer lead Fundraising Committee who arrange fundraising events.

The staff at Sensory Matters Worcestershire work tirelessly to support their clients and rely on fundraising to keep on doing the great work that they do. Without volunteers the charity would struggle to exist and lots of sensory impaired people would be left alone facing social isolation.

So if you have a few hours to spare and you feel able to help but don’t know how, get in touch and the team at Sensory Matters Worcestershire will work with you to make sure you are valued. If I can do it so can you!’

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS!

Today we meet Janine! She was happy to do a little interview with us to let you know about her volunteering experience.

1. How long have you been volunteering with us?
About 2 years.

2. Why did you decide to begin volunteering?
I wanted to support people with sight loss to connect with others and live as independently as possible. I joined after temporarily losing sight in one of my eyes, so had some experience of how quickly life can change, and how difficult it can be to adjust!

3. What have you enjoyed most about your time volunteering?
Being part of a great team, meeting a wide range of people, and discovering that sometimes even the simplest of things - like chatting with someone over coffee - can make a big difference.

4. What benefits have you experienced personally?
Volunteering with Sensory Matters is tremendously rewarding. I’ve met many inspiring people and I always leave the sessions feeling a real buzz.

5. What would you say to anyone who is thinking about volunteering?
Give it a go! It’s a lot of fun.

6. Anything else you’d like to add?
The team at Sensory Matters are brilliant! I feel genuinely valued and supported as a volunteer.

MEET THE VOLUNTEERS!

Today we welcome Dan to our ’ Week post. Dan first started volunteering with Sensory Matters Worcestershire in August 2024 and previously volunteered with hospital radio in Warwickshire. Dan’s role with us is as a Telephone Befriender, talking with blind & partially sighted clients across Worcestershire. Dan says ‘I really enjoy volunteering at Sensory Matters Worcestershire talking to clients about their lives, their ups & downs and how their sight loss affects their lives. The older clients are great to talk with as they remember so much about their lives past, it’s so interesting.’ Dan also enjoys music, museums, travel & walking. Thank you Dan, you make such a difference!
