Friday Feature | A Harrier Returns to Inspire Year Six

It was a pleasure to welcome former pupil Seb Thompson (OE 2012-2019) back to RGS The Grange earlier this term, where he spoke to Year Six pupils about his journey into professional football.

Seb, who plays for Kidderminster Harriers, shared an honest insight into life in professional sport, including the challenges he has faced through injury setbacks and the resilience needed to keep moving forward. His visit offered pupils a valuable reminder that success often comes through determination, perseverance and a willingness to keep going when things do not come easily.

Seb also reflected fondly on his own time at School, encouraging pupils to make the most of every opportunity available to them. Alongside sport, he remembered being part of the School choir and playing the saxophone, reminding pupils that they do not need to limit themselves to just one interest.

Thank you to Seb for returning to RGS The Grange and for taking the time to answer so many thoughtful questions from pupils. We are very proud of his achievements and grateful for the inspiration he shared.

Friday Feature | Welcoming Chris Pennell to RGS Worcester 🏉

We are delighted to announce the appointment of former Worcester Warriors Captain and England international Chris Pennell as RGS Worcester’s new Head of Rugby.

Chris brings more than 16 years of professional Rugby experience to the role, alongside a strong reputation for leadership, mentorship and community engagement. During his career, he captained Worcester Warriors, represented England at international level and later played for Dallas Jackals in Major League Rugby in the United States.

Alongside his professional career, Chris has remained heavily involved in youth sport and community development. He is a Trustee of the Worcester Warriors Foundation, founder of Chris Pennell’s Diabetes Rugby Academy and an ambassador for both JDRF UK and Diabetes UK.

As Head of Rugby at RGS Worcester, Chris will lead Rugby across the School, supporting pupils of all abilities and helping to build upon the strong foundations already in place across The RGS Worcester Family of Schools.

We are thrilled to welcome Chris to RGS and look forward to the experience, energy and leadership he will bring to Rugby at RGS in the years ahead.

Throwback Thursday | A return to the Cricketer Cup 🏏

The Old Elizabethians Cricket team travelled to Radley College recently for their debut fixture in the National Cricketer Cup, facing fellow alumni side the Radley Rangers.

Contributions from Freddie Ammonds, Alex Wheeler, Rhodri Williams, Ben Sutton and Tom Odell helped the OEs post a competitive total, before a determined bowling display kept the game finely balanced against a strong Radley side captained by former England international Jamie Dalrymple.

Although Radley reached the target with just 10 balls remaining, it was a brilliant occasion and a proud moment for OE Cricket.

A brilliant occasion and a lovely reminder of the friendships, familiar faces and competitive spirit that continue long after leaving RGS.

What’s On Wednesday | Weaving Creative Futures 🧵

It was a pleasure to welcome former pupil Georgie Hollingworth (OE 2020) back to School last week, where she led a series of weaving workshops with Year Ten Textiles pupils.

Georgie joined RGS Dodderhill in 2010 before continuing her Sixth Form studies at RGS Worcester from 2018 to 2020. Since leaving School, she has gone on to study at Wi******er School of Art, specialising in botanical weaving and developing her own distinctive creative style through colourful yarn work and woven textile techniques.

Alongside leading practical workshop sessions, Georgie also shared her portfolio and spoke to pupils about her creative journey since leaving School, offering valuable insight into studying Textiles at degree level and building a career within the arts.

Welcoming Georgie back to RGS Worcester offered a lovely opportunity for pupils to learn from one of our alumni and gain insight into the creative path she has followed since leaving School.

Friday Feature | Maxwell Moses Signs Professional Football Contract

This week’s Friday Feature celebrates Old Elizabethan Maxwell Moses (2020-2025), who has signed his first professional contract with West Bromwich Albion following more than a decade with the Club.

Maxwell’s journey with West Bromwich Albion began at a young age through the Club’s Development Centre before officially joining the Academy at Under Seven level. Now preparing to begin his 11th season with the Club this summer, the contract is a significant milestone and recognition of years of commitment, discipline and hard work.

Originally from London, Maxwell grew up in Worcester and joined West Bromwich Albion from Worcester Colts. Alongside his continued development at Club level, he has represented England at both Under 16 and Under 17 level and has already featured for West Bromwich Albion’s Under 18 side and Premier League 2 team.

During his time at RGS, Maxwell balanced the demands of school life alongside an intensive training schedule, committing to Academy training four evenings each week while also attending additional daytime sessions as part of the Club’s pathway. Following his GCSEs, he accepted an early scholarship offer with West Bromwich Albion, allowing him to continue pursuing Football alongside his studies.

Those who taught and supported Maxwell during his time at School will remember not only his dedication to Football, but also the maturity, humility and determination he showed throughout his time at RGS Worcester.

Reflecting on the achievement, Maxwell said: “I felt honoured to sign a professional contract early, a dream come true. It’s taken many years and hard work, but it’s all been worth it.”

We are delighted to see Maxwell reach this exciting stage of his Football journey and look forward to following his future achievements in the years ahead!

Friday Feature | From Young Enterprise to Wild Thingz

For this week’s Friday Feature, we are delighted to celebrate Old Elizabethan Fliss Newland (Class of 2010), founder of the fast-growing confectionery brand Wild Thingz.

After studying Business Management at the University of Exeter and gaining industry experience with Lidl UK, Fliss built her career with Mondelez, working across major brands including Cadbury and Maynards Bassetts in both the UK and South East Asia. Following almost seven years in Sales and Marketing, she took the leap into entrepreneurship to launch her own business.

Wild Thingz was created with a mission to rethink the traditional sweets market, producing plant-based sweets with no artificial colours, flavours or additives and significantly reduced sugar, while still keeping the fun and enjoyment families look for. The brand is now stocked nationwide in retailers including Ocado, Co-op, Whole Foods Market, Planet Organic and Amazon.

Reflecting on her time at RGS Worcester, Fliss shared: “Some of my fondest memories are from doing the Young Enterprise programme at School, selling foam fingers for the annual King’s vs RGS rugby match to raise capital for our business idea! I am still great mates with my incredible year group from School who are still a fantastic network of support.”

Fliss also offered this advice to current pupils and fellow Old Elizabethans interested in business or entrepreneurship: “If you have a passion or idea, just start - don’t wait for everything to be perfect. You’ll learn so much along the way and setbacks are just part of the journey. Stay curious, be flexible and surround yourself with people who inspire you.”

We are delighted to see Fliss building such an exciting brand and look forward to following the continued success of Wild Thingz!

A vision taking shape.

Work continues on the entrance to Perrins Hall, with improvements designed to support accessibility while respecting the character of one of the School’s most recognisable buildings.

Supported by an Old Elizabethan and his wife, the development will deliver a new accessible entrance while carefully preserving the historic character of Perrins Hall.

We are incredibly grateful for their support and look forward to sharing further updates as work progresses.
