Who do we help? Daniel's story with St Paul's - From Struggle to Strength

Daniel moved into St Paul’s in May 2022 following a relationship breakdown with his partner. He reported that he could drink alcohol in excess at times and that he was keen to move on from St Paul’s immediately in order to ‘sort his life out’.

The start of Daniel’s stay was difficult, he would push boundaries with staff and was often involved in activities that he shouldn’t have been. Daniel struggled to tell the truth about his addictions and behaviours, despite being reassured that this would not result in exit from St Paul’s.

However, despite the challenging behaviours, Daniel was intelligent, likeable and had a great sense of humour.

The Hostel staff team, with support from the Hostel Manager and Housing Officers, worked hard with Daniel to establish clear boundaries and gradually, through gaining his trust, started to see changes in his behaviour. Daniel began opening up to staff about his actions and reflecting on why he behaved in certain ways.

Today, Daniel is an active member of St Paul’s community. He participates in the St Paul’s Incentive Scheme, completing tasks around the Hostel, volunteers in the Kitchen and engages well with members of staff and with the local Drug and Alcohol service. Daniel is open with staff about his substance use and actively seeks help and support if he feels that he is likely to relapse.

He is often asked to help staff with tasks and is usually found in the Office exchanging banter with staff. Daniel is still keen to move on from St Paul’s but wants to work with staff so that his move is successful.

Who do we help? A second chance at education with Worcester Warriors Foundation

"John" is a child at a Pupil Referral Unit in Worcestershire. John has been an active gang member and has been subjected to serious assault in the past due to anti-social activity.

We have been working with this child to raise confidence to attend school but also to integrate back into the community in a positive way following some really scary instances that have caused him to become isolated. They are now gaining confidence and is hoping to start college this year.

Your support helps young people like this find a way out of dangerous situations and towards a brighter future.

Who do we help? Barry’s Story with Maggs - From Homelessness to Stability

Barry came to the Worcester Day Centre around three years ago after hearing about us from his contacts on the street.

He was in a vicious cycle of he**in addiction and homelessness, paired with mental health that was worsening by the day. The Maggs team quickly referred Barry to the council and started advocating for him, expressing his vulnerabilities to them.

It wasn't a quick process, but we secured Barry temporary accommodation. However, his he**in addiction worsened rapidly, which led to him not being able to manage his accommodation and ultimately, was back on the streets.

Maggs started encouraging him to engage with Cranstoun (a local drug and alcohol agency) after giving him many motivational talks, believing he could break this cycle.

In our experience, this is sometimes what people need - just someone to have faith in them. Having the right working relations and support around him means that Barry is now in a completely different position than when he first walked through Maggs’ doors.

Where is Barry now?
He is now in stable accommodation, his mainstream accommodation. He is clean from drugs and is still engaging with services to maintain this.

Barry still regularly comes in for a cup of tea, a chat and be reminded of how far he's come. He knows where Maggs is and where to turn to should he run into problems he needs support with. This can often be completing forms and giving him a nudge to remember appointments.

Barry is living a less chaotic life and is keeping himself on a positive path.

Where does the money raised from The Big Worcester Sleep Out go?

For Maggs, the money raised through the Big Worcester Sleep Out over the years has gone towards running their Worcester Day Centre.

The Worcester Day Centre aims to be a place where homeless people can come to escape from social isolation. It gives them the chance to feel normal, have ordinary conversations and forget, for a while, about being homeless.

Open 5 days a week, and from 9am, they open their doors to rough sleepers and provide them with breakfast, free showers, laundry and additional support from their team of Support workers.

This support can be anything from a simple ear to listen to, assisting with benefit applications, referrals, housing, appointment making, or applying for welfare.

They have welcomed over 300 people across both day centres, with at least 20 people currently facing homelessness accessing a breakfast.

The day centre receives no statutory funding and relies solely on public donations or grants and trusts to continue the service, which has become a vital part of the community in Worcester for 40 years.

Join us on April 11th to support the vital work they do. Sign up now at: https://worcestersleepout.co.uk/

Where does the money raised from The Big Worcester Sleep Out go?

St Paul's Hostel Worcester runs 365 days a year, providing more than just a bed, they offer a lifeline. They rely entirely on donations to keep their doors open, maintain facilities, and provide essential support for those facing homelessness.

🏠 Safe housing and daily meals
🛠️ Pathways to employment, including their kitchen assistant, gardening, and bike mechanic programs
🧠 Mental health support, harm reduction, and recovery services
💡 Life skills, counselling, and mindfulness to rebuild confidence and independence
🌊 Social opportunities, like day trips, to restore hope and connection
