Whittington Parish Council Urgently Needs New Councillors
Membership has fallen to a critically low level and if more residents do not step forward, there may soon be insufficient councillors to hold formal meetings and make decisions on behalf of the parish. If this happens the parish will lose its voice to represent the community on planning issues, crime and safety, the environment, highways and local services.
This is a particularly important time for Whittington. Major development proposals associated with the new Wychavon town are expected to bring thousands of new homes, warehousing and infrastructure to the area. Without a strong Parish Council, the community risks having little influence over decisions that will directly impact the parish for generations to come.
The position of Parish Councillor is often considered enjoyable and is rarely onerous, with approximately nine meetings per year lasting around two hours each. The position is unpaid and voluntary, but some expenses such as training are paid.
There are currently up to five vacancies on the Parish Council. No previous experience is necessary but to join you must:
• be over 18 and on the electoral register or a resident of the parish or live within three miles of the parish as the crow flies or own a business in the parish
• be able to attend evening meetings
• have a desire to improve the quality of life in the parish
• be able to represent the views of local people
