Our very own Professor Sarah Semple gave a tour de force at UCL tonight, taking us through all three seasons of recent excavation at Yeavering.

Sarah showed how the project’s discoveries and refined chronology confirm Bede (and other historical sources), while opening up new questions on the temporary use of structures, seasonal activity, and the relationship of ordinary people (not just royalty) to the site. We can’t think of a better subject for this 17th Sir David Wilson Lecture in Medieval Studies! ✏️ 📕

Though the Festival has ended, our work here at Yeavering—ensuring the site’s future preservation through sympathetic management, conservation and investigation—doesn’t stop.

We had a memorable Friday evening, as Yeavering’s palace was brought to life with the sound of voice and the glow of light.

We’re back on site today from 10am-4pm for a second day of geophysical survey demos, conversations about small finds, tours of the palace and grandstand, and a 7th-century encampment filled with the sights and smells (and colours!) of the past.

This evening’s splendid rainbow over Yeavering plain. Now, as in the 7th century, this is a place of people, stories, and homecoming.
