We would love to receive posts from local groups that use the facilities or enjoy the area. Runners, MTBers, schools etc. If you have photographs of the wildlife and flora you would like to share please post and tell us what you saw. If you would like to get involved please send us a message and we can let you know when there is a working group up at the site. We need help feeding birds in winter,

putting bird boxes up and planting bulbs. Don't forget to leave the place as you found it for the enjoyment of others. We look forward to seeing you.

Great News....Alex at Forestry England has informed us that work starts tomorrow on pond clearances at Wooler Common. Not only is the main pond being cleared out but also the 100% overgrown pond further upstream (yes there is another pond).

The pond work will be followed by footpath improvements in areas where the surface has failed or where roots have uplifted the surface.

Please follow safety signage whilst the works are in progress.

Red squirrels were out to play in the winter sunshine this morning. I think one adult on the feeder and two kits larking around.

Bird boxes were the order of the day today. One was a refubished box that had stood the test of time but needed a little work to keep it going. Two were made from a recycled furniture. There are another 9 at home waiting to be put up.....

Bumped into the wild goats on the old golf course this morning. Great to see them paying the village a visit.... but not great to see that the Heartbreak Hill "bonsai" tree has been sawn off by someone in the last week or so. Looks like they smashed the rocks off the little crag 😑.

Sightings of any grey squirrels or of any reds that look sick please share to the Wooler Red Squirrel Group https://www.facebook.com/share/1BG2coBD5N/. This will assist in a speedy response following the arrival of squirrel pox in the area (carried by the invasive greys and deadly to the reds). Be vigilant, keep calm and carry on.

Devastating news from Wooler Common. As you can see from this photo our wonderful population of red squirrels has been hit by an outbreak of squirrel pox. This disease is fatal and may have been carried into the area by one of the rogue grey squirrels that have appeared in recent weeks. We will do our best to contain the spread and to assist with this we will be removing all feeder boxes and discontinuing all feeding. We would be grateful if photographers who enjoy their frequent visits would be cautious in attracting squirrels into one area by putting out food. We will keep you informed of the situation via more Facebook posts over coming days/weeks.
