Bess: the Life of Lady Raleigh, Wife to Sir Walter.

Speaker: Anna Beer Author and Historian

Date: 4th December 2025 Time: 1.45 for 2.00pm

Venue: St Hugh of Lincoln Church Community Centre Hensington Road, Woodstock OX20 1JL

Cost: Free for members £3.00 charge for visitors to cover tea, coffee and hall hire.

Anna’s talk is a whistle-stop tour of the remarkable, and long life of Bess Throckmorton, wife to Sir Walter Raleigh. Anna will suggest why re-focusing on figures like Bess Throckmorton can give us fresh insight into the past. For example, we begin to see the court of Queen Elizabeth I as a very special political economy in which women mattered, not least as power brokers, and to see widowhood as a time of opportunity as much as desolation.

'Indians at Victorian Oxford'

Our next Speaker Meeting is on Thursday, 2nd October 2025
Time: 2:00 pm
Venue: St Hugh of Lincoln Church Community Centre,
Hensington Road, Woodstock OX20 1JL

The first Indian students to attend the University of Oxford arrived in 1871, and the bridge between Oxford and India has grown stronger ever since. But why did Indian students begin to attend British universities from the middle of the 19th century?
The talk by Stephen Barker examines the close relationship between Britain and the Subcontinent, aiming to explain briefly the background in Indian politics, the views of families and the students themselves. It also looks at the Oxford Indian Institute, the growth of Balliol College and those dons at the heart of the developments.

The talk focuses on the stories of four students who attended Oxford before the First World War: the first woman to study Law at the university; a Sikh princess, a nationalist revolutionary and a Bengali poet. The talk lasts for 50 minutes and is fully illustrated.

Stephen has worked on behalf of the University of Oxford, the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, Banbury Museum and over thirty different organisations over the last twenty years.

Cost: Free for members, £3.00 charge for visitors to cover tea, coffee, and hall hire.

Our next Speaker Meeting is on Thursday 4th September
when we welcome back Liz Woolley with her extensive knowledge of Oxford to speak on:
Beer Sausages and Marmalade
In the nineteenth century Oxford became well-known for its ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausages’ and for Frank Cooper’s ‘Oxford Marmalade’. The popularity of these delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a tourist destination. Meanwhile large numbers of citizens were involved in brewing, baking and the grocery trade, and the families which controlled these businesses had a powerful influence over Oxford’s economic, social and political life. This talk examines the fascinating relationship between food production, tourism and politics in the city.
Time: 2.00pm to 3.45pm
Venue: St Hughes Centre, Hensington Rd, Woodstock, OX20 1JL
Visitors welcome: £3
