The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust

The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust Our objectives are to protect human life, property and the environment of the Alde and Ore estuary.

Thousands of us benefit from life and holidays in and around the Alde & Ore Estuary in Suffolk every year. Yet without significant investment in the maintenance of the estuary walls, this landscape will not be able to withstand strong tidal surges. The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust is here to fundraise from all stakeholders, residents and visitors to help us preserve this special landscape together.

May is International Walking month. A reminder to get out and about and enjoy the beauty of the Alde and Ore Estuary.

Our tidal flood defences are 44km long and provide access to over 100km of public footpaths, enjoyed by local residents and visitors for wildlife, birdwatching and incredible views.

The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust is working with the ESWMB and the Environment Agency to restore defences where they have been damaged and improve them for the future. You may have spotted Gordon from the ESWMB walking the walls in recent weeks, assessing the integrity of the defenses, which will help us prioritise works in the short term.

You can find out more about The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust on our website. Or by chatting to Trustees at the Orford Flower Show on August 29th.

This Earth Day, we are reminded that the Alde & Ore estuary is not only a place of beauty, but a landscape that depends on our care and stewardship.

Our work to strengthen flood defences is about protecting flora and fauna, homes and businesses, and the unique character of this coastline for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who supports and champions this shared effort.

21 April — World Curlew Day

The Eurasian Curlew is the UK’s largest wading bird, with an elegant wingspan of up to 90cm. Instantly recognisable by its mottled brown / grey plumage, long bluish legs, and distinctive down-curved bill - its name deriving from the Latin for “new moon.”

Curlews are now listed on the European Red List of Birds, with numbers having declined by around 60% across England and Scotland since the 1980s. The loss of breeding habitat is partly due to intensive farming, while predation, chiefly by foxes, remains a significant threat.

They breed between April and July on wet grasslands, heaths and moorland, before moving to our coasts and estuaries for the winter months, where they feed on worms, shrimp and shellfish.

The Alde and Ore Estuary, with its rich mosaic of habitats, is fortunate to support curlews throughout the year.
